Evolution Science and Ethics in the Third Millennium is one of the most lucid academic texts on the subject of evolutionary morality to be published in the last decade. While the book does have some problematic aspects, discussed below, it nonetheless provides what is none other than a comprehensive and rational basis to substantiate the notion that evolutionary science can provide a foundation for the understanding of morality. Cliquet and Avramov take a wholly interdisciplinary approach, encroaching within and forming connections between philosophy, biology, anthropology and sociology among others in their exploration of a rationalized and humanistic approach to moral universalism. They not only take a meta-ethical approach to the investigation of morality in evolutionary science, but they provide a thorough speculative project on potential beneficial future pathways that thinkers and policymakers can employ in making decisions; which is something that is typically sidelined in a topic text such as this.

ith the possible exception of Jane Goodall, Frans de Waal has done more than any other primatologist to change our understanding of the social lives of our closest living evolutionary relatives. His painstaking observations and experiments have exposed capacities for identifying and responding to the needs of conspecifics, apparently most sophisticated in chimpanzees and bonobos, but present in other primates as well. His detailed accounts of the ways in which these capacities are manifested have broken the stranglehold of the fear, once common among primatologists, that postulating complex psychological states and dispositions is sentimental anthropomorphism. Any scholar who hopes to use primate social behavior as a lens for understanding aspects of our own practices should be profoundly grateful. In his Tanner Lectures, de Waal intends to build on his decades of careful research to elaborate the program Darwin envisaged in chapter 5 of The Descent of Man. Human morality, he suggests, stems from dispositions we share with other primates, particularly with those closest to us on the phylogenetic tree. Yet my formulation of his position, like his own, is vague in crucial respects: what exactly is meant by claiming that morality "stems from" traits present in chimpanzees, or that morality is "a direct outgrowth of the social instincts we share with other animals," or that "deep down" we are truly moral, or that "the building blocks of morality are evolutionarily ancient"? I want to focus the position more precisely by articulating a particular version of what de Waal might have in mind. If this version is not what he intends, I hope it will prompt him to develop his preferred alternative with more specificity than he has done so far. In fact, I think de Waal's own presentation is hampered by his desire to take a sledgehammer to something he conceives of as the rival to his own view. That rival, "Veneer Theory," is to be demolished. The fact that the demolition is so easy should alert us to the possibility that the real issues have not been exposed and addressed. Veneer Theory, as I understand it, divides the animal kingdom into two. There are nonhuman animals who lack any capacity for sympathy and kindness, and whose actions, to the extent that they can be understood as intentional at all, are the expression of selfish desires. "Evolution Society, and Ethics: Social Darwinism versus Evolutionary Ethics

Evolutionary ethics (EE) is a branch of philosophy that arouses both fascination and deep suspicion. It claims that Darwinian mechanisms and evolutionary data on animal sociality are relevant to ethical reflection. This field of study is often misunderstood and rarely fails to conjure up images of Social Darwinism as a vector for nasty ideologies and policies. However, it is worth resisting the temptation to reduce EE to Social Darwinism and developing an objective analysis of whether it is appropriate to adopt an evolutionary approach in ethics. The purpose of this article is to ‘dedemonise’ EE while exploring its limits. I shall begin by presenting two ways of integrating a Darwinian way of thinking into the context of social and political sciences1: Social Darwinism and what one could label ‘Prosocial Darwinism’. Next I will point out some of the fundamental errors on which Social Darwinism is grounded; this will help in understanding why contemporary evolutionary ethicists cannot possibly hold the views defended by this theory (unless they are inclined to intellectual dishonesty). On the contrary, EE seems more akin to a Pro-social Darwinian approach, except for the fact that it restricts its reflections to theoretical ethics. The second part of the paper (sections 3 to 7) provides a clear and detailed picture of EE as well as an analysis of its relevance at the different levels of ethics (descriptive, meta-, normative and practical). Special focus will be given to questions relating to the genesis of morals and the delicate shift from facts to norms.

Dealing with the ethical challenges of humankind at the turn of the twenty-first century, and safely guiding the human species through new subsequent stages of biological evolution and adaptation and cultural development, requires rethinking of our values and norms in a longer-term perspective and at the planetary level. Therefore, this chapter starts by discussing the meaning of evolution and presenting an overview of the major stages of the development of evolution science-the Darwinian revolution, the Modern Evolutionary Synthesis, the molecular-genetic revolution and the Second Darwinian Revolution. Next, the two major developmental processes, the hominisation process and the modernisation process, are addressed, which are considered by the authors to be of pivotal importance for the future of human morality. Finally, by confronting the hominisation and modernisation processes, this chapter sets the stage for revealing the necessary changes in values and norms in view of adapting to further progressing modernisation and evolving toward higher levels of hominisation. This excellent collection focuses on three major approaches in current academic philosophy to the question of the relationship between ethics and human evolution. Perhaps a bit more than is usual in edited volumes of this type, it is constructed around the particular interests and philosophical proclivities of editors Michael Ruse and Robert J. Richards. This is a strength in that Ruse and Richards can afford the space to provide an historical perspective of how the debate in which both are avid participants came to take shape, and to present different arguments by multiple philosophers defending a limited set of competing positions. It is a weakness in that the contributors too often refer to each other, and thus allow themselves to neglect too many important contemporary philosophical perspectives on this topic, as well as the insights and discoveries of many scientists and scholars outside of philosophy departments which could (and should) inform their arguments. Part I traces how the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species (in 1859) and The Descent of Man (in 1871) affected academic moral philosophy. With the exception of Naomi Beck's discussion of Friedrich von Hayek (Chapter 4), this section directly addresses the interests of the editors and thus works effectively as a springboard to what comes after. Lillihammer (Chapter 1) shows that Anglophone philosophers through much of the twentieth century 'explicitly responded to' evolutionary approaches to ethics and, for the most part, 'turned away from them on the basis of what they thought of as decisive arguments' (15). Several of these arguments are revived and updated in Part III. In the meantime Jeffrey O'Connell (Chapter 2) explores Friedrich Nietzsche's loathing of evolutionary theory, while Trevor Pearce (Chapter 3) wades through the more ambivalent reception Darwin's ideas found among American pragmatic philosophers. Pearce and Abraham Gibson (Chapter 5) pay special attention to the competition between Darwin's and Herbert Spencer's very different conceptions of evolution. Unlike Darwinism, which is decidedly non-teleological, the Spencerian view highlights the 'correspondence between organism and environment' and envisions an ever-improving natural world in which '[m]ore evolved species … are able to meet a wider and more complicated set of environmental challenges' (45). Spencer was, as Gibson points out, 'the most widely read philosopher in the United States through the second half of the nineteenth century' (74). Yet, 'mastery of the atom' and the discovery of DNA 'accelerated the biological sciences' wholesale shift towards reductionism' (80) and with it Darwinism's rise to hegemonic supremacy. As Ruse points out in his contribution (Chapter 6), which opens Part II of the book, Spencer's ideas remain influential among ecologists such as Rachel Carson and James Lovelock (89), as well as many philosophers, writers, and artists. He even taunts his coeditor Richards for being a Spencerian (90), a charge that Richards good-humoredly rejects as 'the product of a long day in the sun' (5). Yet the question is of paramount importance to metaethical debates about moral justification and indeed about the nature of morality itself. 'The world after Darwin,' declares Ruse, all too rightly, 'is very different from the world before Darwin' (89). If one accepts Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection as fact-and how can one not, given the heaps of extant evidence in support of it, not least of which is the entire field of genetics?-then one must confront its implications: evolution is purposeless and directionless, a product of uncountable random mutations and fortuitous, transient conjunctions between species and environments.

This collection of ten essays (several co-authored) by an international group of philosophers and biologists aims to explore the implications of neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory for our understanding of ethics. In keeping with the interdisciplinary spirit of the volume, 'ethics' is here understood very broadly, such that the study of ethics includes everything from philosophical inquiry into the existence and nature of ethical truth and justification to scientific inquiry into the causal origins of human capacities, emotions, and behaviors commonly categorized as 'ethical'. This, combined with the inclusion of treatments of methodological issues in evolutionary biology and surveys of biological work, makes for a wide range of topics and approaches with rather less unity than the label "evolutionary ethics" might suggest. The result is a set of discussions that vary significantly in their philosophical depth and sophistication.

A defense of evolutionary ethics
