Abstract

This paper examines existing channel models used with xDSL systems and identifies a key shortcoming - namely, the implicit assumption that all impulse noise originates at the transmitter. Based on extensive data collected from the local loop, a new model is proposed which addresses this problem by combining a digital filter model of the transmission line with a distributed noise

What are the limitations of existing channel models for xDSL systems?add

Existing channel models often assume all impulse noise originates at the transmitter, which can overlook varied impulse events. This simplification can lead to inaccuracies in predicting the channel's performance, particularly under real-world conditions.

How does the proposed channel model improve upon traditional approaches?add

The proposed model segments the channel into discrete sections to better account for impulse noise originating from various points. This results in a more accurate representation of noise impacts, a necessary enhancement for ADSL and VDSL systems.

What methodologies were employed to analyze impulse noise from telephone lines?add

The paper utilized Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to reduce impulse noise waveforms to a limited set of basis functions. Additionally, system identification was carried out using Prony's method, yielding a filter with 35 poles and 30 zeros.

What evidence supports the necessity of a new channel model for xDSL?add

Comparison of the optimal impulse response derived from Telstra data and sample waveforms showed high cross-correlation coefficients, indicating limitations in existing models. The Mean Squared Error of 1.9 after applying system identification highlights inaccuracies in traditional noise modeling.

When were ADSL and VDSL standards developed, and why is this significant?add

ADSL was standardized in 1995, with updates in 1998 and 1999, while VDSL standards are still evolving. Understanding these timelines is vital for recognizing the historical context and ongoing development needs for high-bandwidth technologies.
