Automatic Image Registration of Satellite Images using SIFT

Abstract

Image Registration is used to register two images taken in different time or different viewpoint or using different Sensors/Satellites. Image registration is one of the fundamental techniques in Image Processing and is used to find the matches in images taken in different time or viewpoint. In this paper Automatic Image Registration of remotely sensed images is proposed by an extension to the Scale Invariant Feature Transform. The proposed algorithm is fully automatic for finding the keypoints, matching them and resampling the image. This proposed technique has been successfully tested on the images taken by Resourcesat-1 Linear Imaging and Self Scanning Sensor (LISS) sensor and Resourcesat-1 AWiFS. Root mean square error is used as the measure for registration accuracy.
