What counts as a good decision depends on the domain. In diagnostic imaging, for instance, a good decision involves diagnosing cancer if and only if the patient has cancer. In clinical ethics, good decision-making is defined in terms of the extent to which the following two goals are met: 1. Accuracy: The decision is the right one, where the “right” decision is that which best aligns with relevant justifying values, principles and their respective weights as they apply to the case at hand. 2. Transparency: The patients are provided with an explanation of the decision in terms of relevant values, principles and how they are weighed. In other words, the patients are offered reasons that explain and justify the decision. For the use of artificial intelligence in clinical ethics to be ethically justified, it should improve the transparency and accuracy of ethical decision-making beyond that which physicians and ethics committees are currently capable of providing.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds the potential to act as a facilitator in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. At the same time, there is a risk that AI will exacerbate inequalities and tensions on the continent in environmental, social and economic areas, not least through data exploitation.

Like most people, I first encountered Artificial Intelligence through movies - The Terminator, Blade Runner, 2001. As a rule, the future in these stories was always dystopian which I found irritating. If humanity was able to create such amazing technology, wouldn't they also have created ethical codes or standards to keep things from going awry? Granted, a film about a code of ethics isn't as sexy as killer robots, but picturing utopian futures powered or assisted by AI seemed like something not enough people were doing in my estimation.

The present and the future will be determined by topics such as artificial intelligence and the question arises to what extent an often quoted usefulness, an "AI for Social Good" and "AI is for Humans" really applies. The lecture is intended to provide food for thought

Computers process information and make decisions. Until recently, the decisions they made were not complex, but due to the incessant technological advances that are taking place, systems based on artificial intelligence are achieving levels of competence in decision-making that in many contexts equal or surpass those of humans. These are autonomous decision-making systems that, although they can increase the capacity and efficiency of people in their fields of action, they could also replace them, something that is of concern to society as a whole. Avoiding dysfunctions in these systems is a priority social, scientific and technological objective, which requires theoretical models that include all the richness and variety of decision problems, that precisely define the elements that characterize them and that address the ethical principles that should guide their operation. This article describes each of these aspects in separate sections.
