Abstract

Abstract The OWL 2 Web Ontology Language, informally OWL 2, is an ontology language for the Semantic Web with formally defined meaning. OWL 2 ontologies provide classes, properties, individuals, and data values and are stored as Semantic Web documents. OWL 2 ontologies can be used along with information written in RDF, and OWL 2 ontologies themselves are primarily exchanged as RDF documents. There are three types of class expressions in OWL 2 RL. The subClassExpressior oroduction defines the class expressions that can occur as subclass expressions ir SubClassOf axioms; the superClassExpression production defines the class 2xpressions that can occur as superclass expressions in SubClassOf axioms; and he equivClassExpressions production defines the classes that can occur in EquivalentClasses axioms.

In order to avoid potential performance problems in practice, OWL 2 RL/RDF rules do not include the axiomatic triples of RDF and RDFS (i.e., those triples that must be satisfied by, respectively, every RDF and RDFS interpretation) [RDF Semantics] and the relevant OWL vocabulary [OWL 2 RDF-Based Semantics]; moreover, OWL 2 RL/RDF rules include most, but not all of the entailment rules of RDFS [RDF Semantics]. An OWL 2 RL/RDF implementation may include these triples and entailment rules as necessary without invalidating the conformance requirements for OWL 2 RL [Conformance].

The OWL API: a Java API for working with OWL 2 ontologies

Abstract. This paper presents the OWL API a high level Application Programming Interface (API) for working with OWL 2 ontologies. The API is closely aligned with the OWL 2 structural specification. It supports parsing and rendering in the syntaxes defined in the W3C specification, namely, the Functional Syntax, RDF/XML, OWL/XML and the Manchester OWL Syntax. Finally, the reference implementation of the API, which is written in Java, includes validators for the various OWL 2 profiles-OWL 2 QL, OWL 2 EL and OWL 2 RL.

From SHIQ and RDF to OWL: The making of a web ontology language

The OWL Web Ontology Language is a new formal language for representing ontologies in the Semantic Web. OWL has features from several families of representation languages, including primarily Description Logics and frames. OWL also shares many characteristics with RDF, the W3C base of the Semantic Web. In this paper, we discuss how the philosophy and features of OWL can be traced back to these older formalisms, with modifications driven by several other constraints on OWL.

Since achieving W3C recommendation status in 2004, the Web Ontology Language (OWL) has been successfully applied to many problems in computer science. Practical experience with OWL has been quite positive in general; however, it has also revealed room for improvement in several areas. We systematically analyze the identified shortcomings of OWL, such as expressivity issues, problems with its syntaxes, and deficiencies in the definition of OWL species. Furthermore, we present an overview of OWL 2-an extension to and revision of OWL that is currently being developed within the W3C OWL Working Group. Many aspects of OWL have been thoroughly reengineered in OWL 2, thus producing a robust platform for future development of the language.
