An Integrated System for QoS Monitoring of Policy-Based Networks

This paper presents the design and implementation of a measurement-based QoS and resource management framework, CNQF (Converged Networks’ QoS Management Framework). CNQF is designed to provide unified, scalable QoS control and resource management through the use of a policy-based network management paradigm. It achieves this via distributed functional entities that are deployed to co-ordinate the resources of the transport network through centralized policy-driven decisions supported by measurement-based control architecture. We present the CNQF architecture, implementation of the prototype and validation of various inbuilt QoS control mechanisms using real traffic flows on a Linux-based experimental test bed.

Policy-based Management has been the subject of extensive research over the last decade. More recently, the IETF has been investigating Policy-based Networking as a means for managing IP-based multi-service networks with quality of service guarantees. Policies are seen as a way to guide the behaviour of a network or distributed system through high-level, declarative directives. We mainly view policies as a means of extending the logic of a management system at runtime, so that it can be adaptive to changing or newly emerging requirements. We are interested in particular in the coexistence of "hard-wired" hierarchical management systems with policy logic in a fashion that the overall system becomes programmable and extensible. In this paper we consider generic issues behind hierarchical policy-based management systems and we present initial work on such a system for dimensioning and dynamic resource management in IP Differentiated Services networks.

Fixed and wireless networks are increasingly converging towards common connectivity with IP-based core networks. Providing effective end-to-end QoS management in such complex heterogeneous converged network scenarios requires unified, adaptive and scalable solutions that integrate and co-ordinate diverse QoS mechanisms of different access technologies with IP-based QoS. Policy-based management is one approach that could be employed to address this challenge. Hence, a policy-based framework for end-to-end QoS management in converged networks, CNQF (Converged Networks QoS Management Framework) has been designed within our project. This paper explores the application of the framework for adaptive measurement-based QoS control driven by high-level policy decisions. Based on CNQF architecture, a prototype has been developed in Java and evaluation tests undertaken on our testbed demonstrate the viability of the measurement-based CNQF QoS management approach.

High-end networked applications such as distance visualization, distributed data analysis, and advanced collaborative environments have demanding quality of service (QoS) requirements. This paper focuses on making policy decisions when users attempt to make reservations for network bandwidth across several administrative network domains that are controlled by a bandwidth broker. We present a signalling protocol that facilitates the establishment of a distributed policy decision point as well as the establishment of a direct signalling channel between the source and end domains.

This paper introduces the notion of PoP (policy of policies) used to define standard policy replacement strategies in a policy-based network. We also propose an architecture to support PoP within PDPs (policy decision points originally defined by the IETF). The notion of PoP, and the proposed architecture allow the automation of the policy replacement task currently manually executed by the network administrator based on the network business plan.

At the current development stage of computer networks, the emergence of new applications that use the high performance available is unavoidable. In this context, any service that requires high performance also requires network QoS (Quality of Service). To help the maintenance of QoS services and QoS provisioning mechanisms, this work proposes a QoS monitor. This monitor operates on IP-based networks and its goal is to measure current QoS parameters observed on the network and compare them with the negotiated QoS parameters. Thus, network managers can be informed about degradations, and proceed with proper actions in order to provide adequate conditions to applications that require strict time warranties in order to operate properly.

Policy-based network management (PBNM) paradigms provide an effective tool for end-to-end resource management in converged next generation networks by enabling unified, adaptive and scalable solutions that integrate and co-ordinate diverse resource management mechanisms associated with heterogeneous access technologies. In our project, a PBNM framework for end-to-end QoS management in converged networks is being developed. The framework consists of distributed functional entities managed within a policy-based infrastructure to provide QoS and resource management in converged networks. Within any QoS control framework, an effective admission control scheme is essential for maintaining the QoS of flows present in the network. Measurement based admission control (MBAC) and parameter based admission control (PBAC) are two commonly used approaches. This paper presents the implementation and analysis of various measurement-based admission control schemes developed within a Java-based prototype of our policy-based framework. The evaluation is made with real traffic flows on a Linux-based experimental testbed where the current prototype is deployed. Our results show that unlike with classic MBAC or PBAC only schemes, a hybrid approach that combines both methods can simultaneously result in improved admission control and network utilization efficiency.
