TOWARDS A REFERENCE MODEL FOR COLLABORATIVE NETWORKED ORGANIZATIONS

Collaborative networks show a high potential as drivers of value creation. The materialization of this potential however requires further progress in understanding these organizational forms and the underlying principles of this new paradigm. As a contribution in this direction, the notion of collaboration among organizations is clarified, a taxonomy of collaborative networks is proposed, and the basic elements of value creation are discussed, in the context of a holistic approach to collaborative networks.

Collaborative networks show a high potential for value creation in a modern society and raise important technical and socio-organizational challenges. Collaborative networks manifest in a large variety of forms both in industry and services, including virtual organizations, virtual enterprises, dynamic supply chains, professional virtual communities, etc. In order to support preparedness of organizations for participation in dynamic coalitions, breeding environments for virtual organizations are being developed in many application sectors in diverse geographical regions. A large body of empiric knowledge related to collaborative networks is already available, but there is an urgent need to consolidate this knowledge and build the foundations for a more sustainable development of this area. The definition of reference models and the establishment of a scientific discipline for collaborative networks are strong instruments in achieving this purpose. In this survey paper the main characteristics of the area are analyzed, current baseline is discussed, and future trends are pointed out.

The orientation on the technical content of a reference model can increase the efficiency of processes in business engineering projects. Despite this, the use of reference models in the field of business engineering has not yet established itself in practice. The article at hand addresses this problem from a pragmatic perspective focusing on the designers' needs in specific modeling situations. Our work has revealed that we are in need of comprehensive infrastructures which provide various kinds of design support. Apart from methodological contributions, work in the fields of organizational and technological infrastructure design is needed. In order to illustrate and evaluate our approach, we will present a study which applies the findings for the setup of an infrastructure that makes use of collaborative techniques. The infrastructure will be presented with respect to each building block, including the presentation of a prototype. This pragmatic approach thus, results in collaborative reference modeling and presents a way of using reference modeling for organizational change.

It is important for stakeholders to understand business potential and feasibility before investing in designing and implementing Information Technology services that support the enterprise operation. Ontologies for Business Models capture the essential elements and their relationships that contribute to provide value to all parties to validate the underlying rationale of the business opportunity. This paper presents a template and methodology to capture the elements and their relationships in a Business Model for Collaborative Networked Organizations. The template is a skeleton based on an ontological approach, and the methodology describes how the skeleton could be used to explain and illustrate the business models. Results and experiences of a real study case using this methodology are described.

Collaborative networks represent a fundamental paradigm in modern industrial organizations. It is not only a survival factor or a mechanism to increase agility, but also a basis to promote innovation through collaboration. Aiming at giving a general overview of the area, this paper presents a summary of its current achievements and further research challenges.

It is admitted that there is parallel between a System of Systems (SoS) and Collaborative Networked Organizations (CNOs). SoS Engineering (SoSE) carefully focuses on choosing, assembling and interfacing existing systems to build the so-called SoS. In this context, and as demonstrated by the literature and the System Engineering domain, interoperability takes on its full meaning and has to be fully considered as a decisive factor when organizations set up a CNO. This paper proposes to 1) model the SoS through a metamodel that includes concepts which 2) enable interoperability modeling and the analysis of its impact on the SoS' characteristics, stability, integrity, performance and behavior. The proposed analysis is based on a verification approach mixing simulation and formal proof techniques.

Fluent creation of opportunity-based short-term Collaborative Networks (CNs) among organizations or individuals requires the availability of a variety of up-to-date information. A pre-established properly administrated strategic-alliance Collaborative Network (CN) can act as the breeding environment for creation/operation of opportunity-based CNs, and effectively addressing the complexity, dynamism, and scalability of their actors and domains. Administration of these environments however requires effective set of functionalities, founded on top of strong information management. The paper introduces main challenges of CNs and their management of information, and focuses on the Virtual organizations Breeding Environment (VBE), which represents a specific form of strategic-alliances. It then focuses on the needed functionalities for effective administration/management of VBEs, and exemplifies information management challenges for three of their subsystems handling the Ontology, the profiles and competencies, and the rational trust.

The benefits of using various forms of Collaborative Networked Organisations (CNOs, or Collaborative Networks - CNs) to create agile virtual organisations, shop floors and laboratories, or to bring together professionals worldwide in virtual communities are commonly acknowledged in the academic and industrial communities. However, the advancement of the CN domain to a discipline status essentially depends on the structuring of
