SIVA Producer-A Modular Authoring System for Interactive Videos

Today, content creation is not reserved to professional authors anymore. Many net surfers wish to create their own content to share them with their tribe: family, friends… Many tools are available to create media contents for the Web as Macromedia Flash. Nevertheless, Flash is a professional authoring tool and it is much too complicated for a simple user. In our solution, we provide pre-created templates to the author and all he/she has to do is to customize these templates with his A/V sources, texts, colors … In addition to the ease of authoring, the multimedia content is delivered in MPEG-4 format. In this paper, we will demonstrate how, for the applications we want to address, MPEG-4 offers new possibilities in comparison with other formats and we present our template-guided editing tool Harmonia, its interface and architecture.

Next generation of multimedia authoring tools will be targeted to the end-users. This assumption is the starting point of my thesis work, which deals with the underlying technological infrastructure and the needed theoretical models for realizing next generation multimedia authoring tools. My argumentation is based in one common trend. While in the past the multimedia lifecycle was authoring-distribution-consumption, in the current landscape viewers have become active nodes in the networked media chain. Now, they have become, apart from consumers, producers and distributors. Thus, they need a new set of authoring and sharing tools to satisfy their needs. At this stage in my PhD, after a detailed review of related work and systems (e.g., YouTube) and the implementation of a number of prototypes (e.g., caption interface and pan & zoom authoring tool), I can identify the topic area of my thesis and the following next steps to achieve it.

This paper contributes to the modeling of audiovisual information with a particular focus on the description needs for the composition of video elements (character, shot, scene, etc.) with other media information (text, sound, image, etc) inside multimedia document. This model has been experimented through an authoring and presentation tool called VideoMadeus. The resultants are illustrated with several examples of document where spatio-temporal synchronization of video is required.

We present a user-friendly software application that can be used in a post-production environment and that allows to automatically or semi-automatically perform spatiotemporal segmentation of video objects. The central element in the application is a local pyramid-based segmentation algorithm. Several tools are provided to interactively guide or correct the automatic process when necessary. The masks of the extracted objects can be exported in a Flash or XML vectorized format and can be synchronized to the original video for many applications such as clickable videos.

Digital video is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. However, editing video remains difficult for several reasons. It is a time-based medium, it has dual tracks of audio and video, and current tools force users to work at the smallest level of detail. In this paper, we describe several visualization and interaction techniques that use video metadata, including a transcript, to mitigate the problems of editing in this domain. We implemented these techniques in Silver, an authoring tool designed to make it easier for novice users to edit video. To help users visualize video, Silver provides multiple views with different semantic content and at different levels of abstraction, including storyboard, editable transcript and timeline views. Silver offers intelligent editing operations that help users resolve the inconsistencies that arise because of the different boundaries in audio and video. We conducted a preliminary user study to investigate the effectiveness of the system. Participants successfully edited video after only a short tutorial, both with and without intelligent editing assistance. Our research suggests several ways in which video editing tools could use metadata to assist users in the reuse and composition of video.

This paper proposes a new way for authoring multimedia documents. It uses the concept of structured media that allows to deeper access into media objects. An experiment of structuring video in our authoring and presentation environment for multimedia documents is described. It allows the author to interactively specify various audiovisual structures. A video description and structuration model is used for the composition of video elements (character, shot, scene, etc.) with other media objects (text, sound, image, etc). Such a composition allows to easily realize attractive multimedia presentations where media stuffs can be synchronized in rich and various ways (spatio-temporal synchronization, temporal links, etc.).
