Typologies: Forming Concepts and Creating Categorical Variables

Abstract

Given our concern with the role of typologies in conceptualization and measurement, the discussion here necessarily focuses on "descriptive" typologies. In such typologies, the cells correspond to specific types or instances of a broader concept. These can be contrasted with "explanatory" typologies, 1 in which the rows and columns are explanatory variables, and the cells contain hypothesized outcomes. Both descriptive and explanatory typologies can, in addition, be used to classify cases.

Classification (in general) and typology (in particular) are processes that run in all aspects of human life. Human beings are daily confronted with multiple and varied data, and in order to accelerate decision-making, categorize amorphous data, organize their environment, and respond to external stimuli based on knowledge of each category. the purpose of classification is ultimately to obtain a typology or taxonomy. Typology alone is not a research method, and in most of the studies reviewed there has been an auxiliary tool alongside formal research methods. The tendency to use quantitative methods as auxiliary methods of typology is surprising, since we have introduced typology as a concept-based method, while most of the methods used to construct those methods are quantitative. This suggests that there is not yet a complete consensus on the typology of construction. Transparency in typology construction methods can lead to greater use of typology.

If the goals of linguistic typology, are, as described by Plank (2016): (a) to chart linguistic diversity (b) to seek out order or even unity in diversity knowledge of the current state of the art is an invaluable tool for almost any linguistic endeavor. For language documentation and description, knowing what distinctions, categories, and patterns have been observed in other languages makes it possible to identify them more quickly and thoroughly in an unfamiliar language. Knowing how they differ in detail can prompt us to tune into those details. Knowing what is rare cross-linguistically can ensure that unusual features are richly documented and prominent in descriptions. But if documentation and description are limited to filling in typological checklists, not only will much of the essence of each language be missed, but the field of typology will also suffer, as new variables and correlations will fail to surface, and our understanding of deeper factors behind cross-linguistic similarities and differences will not progress.

Debate Re-doing typology

In good science one expects experiments to be reproducible and their results to be replicable. Results are only accepted if researchers other than those who designed and ran the original experiment and thereby obtained results rousing the scientific community to (re-)action can independently repeat the same experiment and obtain the same results, over and over again. Scientific methods include not only experimentation but also surveys. In the life sciences, probably all population and ecological sciences, sciences of the past (palaeontology, archaeology, etc.), and sociology, surveys are used rather than experiments. Essentially, an experiment is where the researcher manipulates conditions, and a survey is where s/he selects conditions. Simulation is another standard procedure in some of the sciences, where experiments or surveys would be unviable. The replicability issue is equally important for experiments , surveys, and simulations. The question is: to what extent does this principle of scientific method-that in order to be accepted, results must be replicable-apply to linguistic typology? For once, let's be catholic on what is typology. Typology is concerned with the human capacity for speaking and understanding. This is what most of linguistics is about, but typology's special remit is to observe, describe, and explain how particular manifestations of this capacity-the particular grammars and lexicons mentally represented by individual speakers and socially shared by speech communities-can or cannot vary. The first real question then is whether typology is a science. The alternative, to put it somewhat grossly, is that it is a form of art, like writing sonnets or interpreting them. Most current practitioners of typology presumably opt for science, be it cognitive or behavioural or both, even when based in Arts or Humanities faculties. That is to say, they would like to see the results of their work evaluated as true or false rather than as beautiful or ugly, meaningful or meaningless. Perhaps more accurately, there is a commitment to validation and falsification first and only secondarily a concern with aesthetics and hermeneu-tics. Putting Typologies to Work: Concept Formation, Measurement, and Analytic Rigor

Typologies are a well-established analytic tool in the social sciences. Working with typologies contributes decisively to forming concepts, exploring dimensionality, establishing measurement categories, and grouping cases. Yet some critics – basing their arguments on what they believe to be relevant norms of quantitative measurement – consider typologies to be an old-fashioned and unsophisticated mode of analysis. We show that this critique is methodologically unsound. The use of typologies can and should proceed according to high standards of rigor. We offer a basic template for constructing typologies and show how they can be “put to work” in refining concepts and measurement, examining underlying dimensions, and organizing explanatory claims and causal inference. The conclusion presents guidelines for careful work with typologies.

The purpose is to discuss and exemplify how a typological approach could be designed for studying phenomena believed to be best understood within a person-oriented theoretical framework. The focus is mainly restricted to the case of studying the typological structure of a sample at a single point in time, and restricted to analyzing variable profiles where each variable has a "negative" and "positive" endpoint. An artificial data set and an empirical data set were analyzed using two different methodological approaches, one more explorative (using LICUR, a cluster analysis-based procedure) and one more model-based (using the MCLUST procedure). For the artificial data set, the LICUR procedure was successful in finding the true classification structure but the MCLUST procedure performed surprisingly badly. For the empirical data set, both procedures produced rather similar solutions and they showed moderate validity. However, the LICUR solution appeared to be slightly superior. It was argued that applying a sound classification methodology and carefully validating the resulting classifications are extremely important, even more so in a developmental context. It was also argued that, in a number of situations, a more explorative approach could be more useful than a standard model-based one.

Economy in formulating typological generalizations

Typically, a linguistic typology deÞnes all logically possible types and states which of these types are actually attested and which are not. The task then is to describe such a typology, preferably in the most economic way. In this paper, a descriptive principle is justiÞed to the effect that for any typology with at least one unattested type there exists a minimal description, consisting of a conjunction of non-statistical (implicational) Greenberg's Appendix II (1966) and Hawkins' Expanded Sample. Hawkins (1983) has noticed that Greenberg's universals do not describe all and only the attested types in Appendix II, but our analysis shows that Hawkins himself has not been fully successful in describing the typology in his Expanded Sample either.

ARBITRARY CONSTRAINT theories argue that certain sets of features patterm together because they have a single underlying cause in the innate language faculty (eg, the Principles and Parameters program; see Chomsky & Lasnik 1993).
