The proliferation of location services and location determination in mobile devices had broaden the landscape for the development of heterogeneous Location-based Services (LBS). The correlation of LBS applications, mobile devices and facilitating technology is a complex issue due to its diversity, hence there are immense contextual definitions of LBS. This study, review the applications and services of LBS in order to provide a common classified LBS applications and services to date. The literature reviews of LBS definitions, standards and guidelines, LBS architecture, LBS components and the most common classification of LBS application and services were attained.

The rapid growth of personal mobile communication devices has generated the need for more and more wireless applications. In this respect, the knowledge of mobile user's location can add to the fields of services and applications that can be offered to the mobile user. Such enhanced services are termed as 'Location Based Services' (LBS). It is a rapidly growing technology in the sector of mobile communication and services and offers a large application domain. This paper delves into the possible advantages of using mobile phones with built-in GPS support for Location Based Services over the approach using CELL-ID or Cell of Origin (COO) method and also prescribes a general architectural idea along with an example application for implementing LBS using Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled mobile devices on client side.

Location aware services have been envisioned as the killer application for the wireless Internet. But they did not gain sufficient attention. We are convinced that one of the major pitfalls is that there is up to now no way to charge for this kind of services. In this paper we present an architecture which provides the basic mechanisms needed to realize charged location based services. The three major components are: a location aware middleware platform, an information server and a micro payment system. We provide performance data that clearly indicates that such a system can be deployed without exhausting the resources of mobile devices or infrastructure servers.

Mobile setting considerations provide valuable issues regarding flexible mobile applications. In this paper, we indicate the advantages of an m-commerce application capable to provide users with useful information (e.g. historical buildings, shops, hotels) according to their location. First, the application creates a basic profile of the current user (type of information the user is mainly interested in). Then, in addition with the location awareness of the user's position the application provides only useful information according to the user's whereabouts. When the user is alerted that he is in close proximity of one place that he is interested in, he has the option to access more info about it (streaming video or photo and text). The application is implemented using the Java Micro Edition (Java ME) platform and is mainly making use of the Location API, which provides information about the device's present physical location and orientation. The customized information is stored online and is accessed only when user needs it.

Location Management (LM) has become a diverse and broad field for research, and Location Based Services (LBS) are the "Application Layer" of LM. Research areas for LM include LM in Wireless Networks, Ad-hoc networks, WiFi, 802.15, WiMax, and mostly; cellular networks. The integration of IP (especially IPv6) into LM is the hottest topic of today. This survey paper tends to introduce the reader to the latest research on LM in Wireless Data Networks and explore the various technologies under research and construction.

This paper presents an architecture for location aware applications, where positioning sources such as GPS, WaveLAN and Bluetooth devices can be seamlessly interchanged or even combined to achieve a more accurate positioning service with a higher availability than a single positioning source could provide. The architecture also supports peer-to-peer communication to allow clients to interchange position information over a local wireless network such as Bluetooth or WaveLAN. This enables a user to use other users position sources if their clients are close enough. The position information can be used directly by an application or be combined with habitual and other contextual information to achieve more personalized applications. A generic positioning protocol for interchange of position information between position sources and client applications is introduced and different techniques for merging of position information are presented. The interfaces for an application to access the platform and the platform to communicate with positioning sources are also discussed. The paper finally touches on privacy issues and outlines a schema for handling positioning information by using contracts that are easily maintained and controlled by the user.

With the advent of mobile computing devices and cheap location sensing systems, location information has become an important resource both for mobile and 'desktop' users. In this paper, we describe some key concepts a scalable ubiquitous location service should be based on. Firstly, we discuss the general problem of client-server computing in mobile environments. Secondly, we describe the theoretical and design framework for a general location service. Here, we address the use of multiple sources of location information. Further, we describe location domains as a powerful framework for presenting and protecting location information.
