This paper is an exploration in the semantics and pragmatics of linguistic feedback, i.e., linguistic mechanisms which enable the participants in spoken interaction to exchange information about basic communicative functions, such as contact, perception, understanding, and attitudinal reactions to the communicated content. Special attention is given to the type of reaction conveyed by feedback utterances, the communicative status of the information conveyed (i. e., the level of awareness and intentionality of the communicating sender), and the context sensitivity of feedback expressions. With regard to context sensitivity, which is one of the most characteristic features of feedback expressions, the discussion focuses on the way in which the type of speech act (mood), the factual polarity and the information status of the preceding utterance influence the interpretation of feedback utterances. The different content dimensions are exemplified by data from recorded dialogues and by data given through linguistic intuition. Finally, two different ways of formalizing the analysis are examined, one using attribute-value matrices and one based on the theory of situation semantics.

In this article, we compare feedback-related multimodal behaviours in two different types of interactions: first encounters between two participants who do not know each in advance, and naturally-occurring conversations between two and three participants recorded at their homes. All participants are Danish native speakers. The interactions are transcribed using the same methodology, and the multimodal behaviours are annotated according to the same annotation scheme. In the study we focus on the most frequently occurring feedback expressions in the interactions and on feedback-related head movements and facial expressions. This article deals with multimodal feedback in two Danish multimodal corpora, i.e., a collection of map-task dialogues and a corpus of free conversations in first encounters between pairs of subjects. Machine learning techniques are applied to both sets of data to investigate various relations between the non-verbal behaviour-more specifically head movements and facial expressions-and speech with regard to the expression of feedback. In the map-task data, we study the extent to which the dialogue act type of linguistic feedback expressions can be classified automatically based on the non-verbal features. In the conversational data, on the other hand, non-verbal and speech features are used together to distinguish feedback from other multimodal behaviours. The results of the two sets of experiments indicate in general that head movements, and to a lesser extent facial expressions, are important indicators of feedback, and that gestures and speech disambiguate each other in the machine learning process.

In this study, the relations between feedback and communication are investigated. More specifically the important applications of feedback in oral communication are tried to be understood. The central idea of communication is to increase commonality or sharing of information among participants. In the participatory communication or in two-way communication, feedback helps to determine the level of acceptance, understanding, and impact of the message on the receiver. To frame a feedback of message and to interpret feedback message in communication is always a challenging and demanding one. So the present study aims at determining the relationship between "levels of understanding" or the impact of a message and the " nonverbal feedback" in face-to-face oral communication. ABSTRACT

There have been several attempts to annotate communicative functions to utterances of verbal feedback in English previously. Here, we suggest an annotation scheme for verbal and non-verbal feedback utterances in French including the categories base, attitude, previous and visual. The data comprises conversations, maptasks and negotiations from which we extracted ca. 13,000 candidate feedback utterances and gestures. 12 students were recruited for the annotation campaign of ca. 9,500 instances. Each instance was annotated by between 2 and 7 raters. The evaluation of the annotation agreement resulted in an average best-pair kappa of 0.6. While the base category with the values acknowledgement, evaluation, answer, elicit and other achieves good agreement, this is not the case for the other main categories.
