With the advent of the Web 2.0 people are allowed to communicate, exchange information and collaborate across time and space in an unprecedented way. Indeed, a range of new mediated communication forms such as blogs, social communities, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, etc. has emerged allowing people to communicate easily and rapidly. The few existing IMS clients are still based on the telephone metaphor which -although popular and successful -is rather limited. The EUREKA Mobicome project proposes the Personalised Dynamic IMS client, a novel IMS client architecture which makes use of the widget concept. A widget is generally speaking a small application implemented using Web 2.0 technologies. By using widget technology, the Personalised Dynamic IMS client will be able to support more natural, intuitive and richer communication paradigms as follows:

This article presents a virtual client-based converged access architecture for IMS and web services. A virtual client transfers most of the signaling and session maintenance loads to a remote server named surrogate, which implements the IMS client. We describe how we have implemented an IMS-web hybrid service, Movieon-Demand (MoD), by deploying a simple IMS client and web server in a surrogate, and using an open-source implementation of a full IMS environment, from client to application server.

The IP Multimedia Subsystem is an architectural framework for delivering multimedia services over an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Originally, it was specified for wireless networks, but has since evolved to incorporate fixed line access as well. It forms part of a Next Generation Network (NGN) which is defined as a packet-based network where the service functionality is independent of the underlying transport technologies. This allows new converged services to be implemented on top of an existing packet switched network.

Rapid growth and evolution in the area of telecommunications has compelled the network operators to provide seamless integration of all communication applications on a single system. In these circumstances IMS has established itself as a foundation for future wireless and wireline convergence. It provides an opportunity to build an open IP based service platform that will enable an easy and efficient deployment of new multimedia communication services mixing telecom and data services. As 3GPP IMS standards are in their evolving state it becomes very essential to test IMS clients during their development on a platform that simulates the IMS network. IMS client test bed also let the developers to test all error conditions which are not possible on a live. Moreover, it is an expensive deal to use an operator's live network for testing purpose. Aim of this paper is to discuss an efficient architecture for IMS and our experience of building an IMS client test bed using open source elements like OpenIMScore. The test bed is built to accommodate IMS clients operating on varied access types like LAN, GPRS/EDGE/UMTS and Wi-Fi.

The IMS offers telecom operators and service providers with the architecture and the procedures to build an open IP-based service infrastructure for deployment of innovative multimedia communication services that integrate telecom and data services. IMS services should be network agnostic and user-centric. This implies a design of IMS services with reusable service enablers. This service design should rely on a common IMS service modeling to ensure interoperability and coherence in the service portfolio of service providers. The article proposes a definition of IMS services and an IMS service modeling that takes into account the user perception of the service and the technical functions carrying out the service.

Modern consumer electronic devices can easily integrate into distributed computing environments. By applying network-based user interface systems to control these devices, innovative applications become feasible. However, several requirements like high responsiveness and low bandwidth consumption need be satisfied. Particularly, to be applicable in wireless and mobile local and wide area networks, they must circumvent low available data rates and high network latency. We propose a new solution called RemoteUI, which works with abstract user interface (UI) descriptions and their prioritized, incremental remote replication. The system combines different approaches from thin client computing and widget based UI systems and is further optimized in the context of wireless networks and mobile consumer devices. To demonstrate the advantages of our solution, we experimentally compare the proposed RemoteUI System with Virtual Network Computing (VNC) implementations and an HTML-based solution 1 .

Today, thin client applications often rely on the infrastructure of the WWW to deliver their user interfaces (UIs) to clients. While this approach does not require the deployment of application logic on the client, web-based UIs typically do not provide the same level of usability as window-based UIs. We therefore present a UI framework that combines the flexibility of a thin presentation logic with the usability of a full-featured UI: Our approach uses an XMPP-based instant messaging infrastructure to exchange XUL interface descriptions and events between the application logic on the server and a generic UI rendering engine on the client.
