Abstract

In polarized proton operation the RHIC performance is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation two electron lenses are under commission-ing. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compen-sation in general and the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the fu-ture.

RHIC Polarized Proton-Proton Operation at 100 GeV in Run 15

The first part of RHIC Run 15 consisted of ten weeks of polarized proton on proton collisions at a beam energy of 100 GeV at two interaction points. In this paper we discuss several of the upgrades to the collider complex that allowed for improved performance. The largest effort consisted in commissioning of the electron lenses, one in each ring, which are designed to compensate one of the two beambeam interactions experienced by the proton bunches. The e-lenses raise the per bunch intensity at which luminosity becomes beam-beam limited. A new lattice was designed to create the phase advances necessary for a beam-beam compensation with the e-lens, which also has an improved off-momentum dynamic aperture relative to previous runs. In order to take advantage of the new, higher intensity limit without suffering intensity driven emittance deterioration, other features were commissioned including a continuous transverse bunch-by-bunch damper in RHIC and a double harmonic RF cature scheme in the Booster. Other high intensity protections include improvements to the abort system and the installation of masks to intercept beam lost due to abort kicker pre-fires.

Simulation Study of Head-On Beam-Beam Compensation with Realistic Rhic Lattices ∗

To reduce the beam-beam resonance driving terms with half head-on beam-beam compensation in the RHIC polarized-proton operations, the betatron phase advances between the interaction point IP8 and the center of the electron lenses located around IP10 should be kπ ,w herek is an integer. Realistic beam-beam compensation lattices meeting the phase advance requirements were developed and used in the beginning of 2013 polarized proton run, although head-on beam-beam compensation was not implemented yet. In this article, with these lattices and a 6D weak-strong beam-beam simulation model, we calculate the proton dynamic apertures with and without beam-beam compensation. Preliminary results with second order chromaticity correction are also presented.

Commissioning and future plans for polarized protons in RHIC

Polarized protons were injected and accelerated in the clockwise ring of RHIC to commission the first full helical Siberian snake ever used in an accelerator. With the snake turned on, the stable spin direction is in the horizontal plane. Vertically polarized protons were injected with the snake off. The snake was adiabatically ramped to give a spin rotation of 180 • around a horizontal rotation axis about 13 • from the longitudinal. When the beam was accelerated from injection Gγ = 46.5 to Gγ = 48 the spin flipped sign as expected and polarization was preserved. At Gγ = 48 without the snake, no polarization was observed since several spin resonances were crossed. Eventually polarized beam was accelerated to Gγ = 55.7 (29.1 GeV). In the next proton running period we plan to run with two full helical snakes in each ring and collide both transversely and longitudinally polarized protons at an energy around 100 GeV per beam.

RHIC upgrades for heavy ions and polarized protons

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), in operation since 2000, has exceeded its design parameters. The Enhanced Design parameters, expected to be reached in 2009, call for a 4-fold increase over the heavy ion design luminosity, and a 15-fold increase over the proton design luminosity, the latter with an average polarization of 70%. Also in 2009, it is planned to commission a new Electron Beam Ion Source, offering increased reliability and ion species that cannot be supplied currently. The upgrade to RHIC 11, based on electron cooling of the beams, aims to increase the average heavy ion luminosity by an order of magnitude, and the polarized proton luminosity by a factor 2-5. Plans for an electron-ion collider eRHIC is covered in another article in these proceedings.

RHIC polarized proton operation

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) operation as the polarized proton collider presents unique challenges since both luminosity(L) and spin polarization(P) are important. With longitudinally polarized beams at the experiments, the figure of merit is LP 4 . A lot of upgrades and modifications have been made since last polarized proton operation. A 9 MHz rf system is installed to improve longitudinal match at injection and to increase luminosity. The beam dump was upgraded to increase bunch intensity. A vertical survey of RHIC was performed before the run to get better magnet alignment. The orbit control is also improved this year. Additional efforts are put in to improve source polarization and AGS polarization transfer efficiency. To preserve polarization on the ramp, a new working point is chosen such that the vertical tune is near a third order resonance. The overview of the changes and the operation results are presented in this paper.

RHIC polarized proton operation and highlights

RHIC operation as a polarized proton collider presents unique challenges since both luminosity and spin polarization are important. Many improvements and modifications have been made since the last polarized proton operation in 2009. A 9 MHz rf system was completed that improved the longitudinal match at injection. To preserve polarization on the ramp, a new working point was chosen with the vertical tune near a third order resonance. The newly realized orbit and tune feedback systems are essential for polarization preservation. To calibrate the polarization measurement at 250 GeV, polarized protons were accelerated up to 250GeV and decelerated back to 100GeV. A vertical realignment of RHIC was conducted before the run to reduce magnet misalignment. A record peak luminosity was achieved with higher polarization at 250 GeV in this run.

OBSERVATION OF LONG-RANGE BEAM-BEAM EFFECT IN RHIC AND PLANS FOR COMPENSATION

At large distances the electromagnetic field of a wire is the same as the field produced by a bunch. Such a longrange beam-beam wire compensator was proposed for the LHC, and single beam tests with wire compensators were successfully done in the SPS. RHIC offers the possibility to test the compensation scheme with colliding beams. We report on measurements of beam losses as a function of transverse separation in RHIC at 100GeV, and comparisons with simulations. We present a design for a long-range wire compensator in RHIC.

Operational Head-on Beam-Beam Compensation with Electron Lenses in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Head-on beam-beam compensation has been implemented in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in order to increase the luminosity delivered to the experiments. We discuss the principle of combining a lattice for resonance driving term compensation and an electron lens for tune spread compensation. We describe the electron lens technology and its operational use. To date, the implemented compensation scheme approximately doubled the peak and average luminosities.

Experimental Demonstration of Compensation of Beam-Beam Effects by Electron Lenses

We report the first experimental demonstration of compensation of beam-beam interaction effects in high-energy particle collider by using space-charge forces of a low-energy electron beam. In our experiments, an electron lens, a novel instrument developed for the beam-beam compensation, was set on a 980-GeV proton bunch in the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. The proton bunch losses due to its interaction with antiproton beam were reduced by a factor of 2 when the electron lens was operating. We describe the principle of electron lens operation and present experimental results.

Ion optics of RHIC electron beam ion source

RHIC electron beam ion source has been commissioned to operate as a versatile ion source on RHIC injection facility supplying ion species from He to Au for Booster. Except for light gaseous elements RHIC EBIS employs ion injection from several external primary ion sources. With electrostatic optics fast switching from one ion species to another can be done on a pulse to pulse mode. The design of an ion optical structure and the results of simulations for different ion species are presented. In the choice of optical elements special attention was paid to spherical aberrations for high-current space charge dominated ion beams. The combination of a gridded lens and a magnet lens in LEBT provides flexibility of optical control for a wide range of ion species to satisfy acceptance parameters of RFQ. The results of ion transmission measurements are presented.

COMMISSIONING PROGRESS OF THE RHIC ELECTRON LENSES *

In polarized proton operation, the RHIC performance is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome these limitations two electron lenses were installed and are under commissioning. One lens uses a newly manufactured superconducting solenoid, in the other lens the spare super-conducting solenoid of the BNL Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) is installed to allow for propagation of the electron beam. (This spare magnet will be replaced by the same type of superconducting magnet that is also used in the other lens during the 2013 shut-down.) We give an overview of the commissioning configuration of both lenses, and report on first results in commissioning the hardware. We also re-port on lattice modifications needed to adjust the phase ad-vance between the beam-beam interactions and the electron lenses, as well as upgrades to the RHIC instrumentation for the commissioning.

COMMISSIONING RHIC'S ELECTRON LENS *

In the 2013 RHIC polarized-proton run, it was found that the intensity of the RHIC bunch had reached a limit due to the head-on beam-beam interaction at intensity of 2x10 11 , as we expected from our simulations [1]. To overcome this limitation, we have planned to implement two electron lenses for beam-beam compensation. During and after the 2013 RHIC run, some e-lens systems were commissioned. The effect of the e-lens warm solenoids on the protons orbit was observed and corrected by orbit feedback. The blue electron-lens system was fully tested, except for the superconducting magnet; the electron beam was propagated from the gun to the collector, and most of the instrumentation for the blue e-lens was commissioned. The straightness of the superconducting solenoid #2 field was measured for the first time. The installation of the yellow e-lens system and two superconducting magnets are underway.

Long-Range Beam-Beam Compensation in RHIC

In order to avoid the effects of long-range beam-beam interactions which produce beam blow-up and deteriorate beam life time, a compensation scheme with current carrying wires has been proposed. Two long-range beam-beam compensators were installed in RHIC rings in 2006. The effects of the compensators have been experimentally investigated. An indication was observed that the compensators are beneficial to beam life time in measurements performed in RHIC during 2009. In this paper, we report the effects of wire compensator on beam loss and emittance for proton-proton beams at collision energy.

Proposed electron halo detector system as one of the beam overlap diagnostic tools for the new RHIC electron lens

An electron lens for head-on beam-beam compensation planned for RHIC requires precise overlap of the electron and proton beams which both can have down to 0.3 mm rms transverse radial widths along the 2m long interaction region. Here we describe a new diagnostic tool that is being considered to aid in the tuning and verification of this overlap. Some of ultra relativistic protons (100 or 250 GeV) colliding with low energy electrons (2 to 10 keV) will transfer sufficient transverse momentum to cause the electrons to spiral around the magnetic guiding field in a way that will make them detectable outside of the main solenoid. Time-of-flight of the halo electron signals will provide position-sensitive information along the overlap region. Scattering cross sections are calculated and counting rate estimates are presented as function of electron energy and detector position.

RHIC Polarized Proton Operation for 2013

The 2013 operation of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) marks the second year of running under the RHIC II era. This year saw the implementation of several important upgrades designed to push the intensity frontier. Two new electron lenses to compensate beam-beam effects (e-lenses) have been partially installed, along with a new lattice designed for the e-lens operation. A new polarized proton source which generates about factor of 2 more intensity was commissioned as well as a host of RF upgrades ranging from a new longitudinal damper a new Landau cavity in RHIC to a new low level RF system and new beam bunching structure in AGS. We present an overview of the challenges and results from this years run.
