PLAY AS AN INSTRUMENT OF DEVELOPING THE WHOLE CHILD

Abstract

Introductions Play, as the name indicates is a situation whereby one engages in activities to amuse oneself or others or to recreate. It involves such behaviour as teaching, jesting, joking, walking, running, jumping, catching, etc. it is a direct opposite of work. To children, play is an adventure, free and spontaneous , it make them happy and willing to be in one another’s company. The history of play according to Frost, Wartham & Reifel (2005) dates back to antiquity and there is a rich heritage of children’s play. From ancient time, great education thinkers and philosopher like Plato, Dewey, Piaget, Froebel and a host of others including professional Organization like the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Association of Child hood Education International (ACEI) have recognize the essential role of play in children lives. They promoted its role in education and the need for children of all ages to play in the course of their development. To them play has always been in the center of children’s live. Children of pre-school age engage in lots of physical activity. This process paves way for good health, understanding of their abilities and capabilities as well as their environment. Unfortunately, some parents do not encourage their children to take part in the play as they do not see children’s play as a sign of normal growth and development. In line with this observation, Ekarem (2013) remarked that in many African homes, children are expected to be quiet, to sit still and not to disturb the arrangement of things in the home. This restriction on children limits their exploration and experiences on their environment and consequently their learning process. Similarly, it can be concluded that where children are not properly a engaged in play activities, they can give way to unwholesome activity, boredom and poor response to class work.
