In this paper we discuss the restrictions of the spacetime for the standard model of cosmology by using results of the differential topology of 3-and 4-manifolds. The smoothness of the cosmic evolution is the strongest restriction. The Poincare model (dodecaeder model), the Picard horn and the 3-torus are ruled out by the restrictions but a sum of two Poincare spheres is allowed.

Cosmological models with flat spatial geometry

The imposition of symmetries or special geometric properties on submanifolds is less restrictive than to impose them in the full space-time. Starting from this idea, in this paper we study irrotational dust cosmological models in which the geometry of the hypersurfaces generated by the fluid velocity is flat, which supposes a relaxation of the restrictions imposed by the Cosmological Principle. The method of study combines covariant and tetrad methods that exploits the geometrical and physical properties of these models. This procedure will allow us to determine all the space-times within this class as well as to study their properties. Some important consequences and applications of this study are also discussed.

A class of inhomogeneous cosmological models

All solutions of Einstein's field equations representing irrotational dust and possessing a metric of the form ds 2 = dt 2-e 2a dr 2-e 2β {dy 2 + dz 2) are found. The new metrics generalize the earlier Bondi-Tolman, Eardley-Liang-Sachs, and Kantowski-Sachs cosmological models.

Cosmological dynamical systems

In this book are studied, from the perspective of the dynamical systems, several Universe models. In chapter 1 we give a bird's eye view on cosmology and cosmological problems. Chapter 2 is devoted to a brief review on some results and useful tools from the qualitative theory of dynamical systems. They provide the theoretical basis for the qualitative study of concrete cosmological models. Chapters 1 and 2 are a review of well-known results. Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6 are devoted to our main results. In these chapters are extended and settled in a substantially different, more strict mathematical language, several results obtained by one of us in arXiv:0812.1013 [gr-qc]; arXiv:1009.0689 [gr-qc]; arXiv:0904.1577[gr-qc]; and arXiv:0909.3571 [hep-th]. In chapter 6, we provide a different approach to the subject discussed in astro-ph/0503478. Geometrical foundation of the equation of state in cosmological models

This study demonstrates that the equation of state (EOS) of an expanding cosmological model is derivable from the geometrical properties of the model. We do this using our Subluminal Model, which is geometrically based on a pseudo-hypersphere.

Spacetime Models for Cosmology

I revisit Roberto Torretti's "Spacetime Models for the World" [SHPMP 31 (2):171-186 (2000)] in the light of more recent work in (philosophy of) cosmology. I discuss the motivations for FLRW spacetimes as a natural starting point for inquiry, and I suggest contemporary cosmologists can avoid the rationalism that Torretti attributes to Einstein's early work in relativistic cosmology. I then discuss the senses in which FLRW models are idealized, and I show how those idealizations (and partial de-idealizations) have contributed to our understanding of the universe.

Aspects of Quantum Cosmology

In this thesis, we try to resolve the alleged problem of non-unitarity for various anisotropic cosmological models. Using Wheeler-DeWitt formulation, we quantized the anisotropic models with variable spatial curvature, namely Bianchi II and Bianchi VI. We showed that Hamiltonian of respective models admits self-adjoint extension, thus unitary evolution. We further extended the unitary evolution for higher dimensional anisotropic cosmological models. We also showed that unitarity of the model preserves the Noether symmetry but loses the scale invariance. In later part of this thesis, we showed the equivalence of Jordan and Einstein frames at the quantum level for the flat FRW model. Obtained expressions for wave packet matched exactly in both the frames indicating the equivalence of frames. We also showed that equivalence holds true for various anisotropic quantum cosmological models, i.e., Bianchi I, V, X, LRS Bianchi-I and Kantowski-Sachs models.

Some investigations on a cosmological model

This paper contains the study of a six-dimensional space time, in which there are determined the scale factors A(t), B(t), C(t), D(t) and E(t) with the help of the Einstein field equation and of the energy momentum tensor for the case of the perfect fluid. We have also evaluated some cosmological terms, like energy density ρ, energy pressure p, the Hubble parameter H, the deceleration parameter q, the anistropic mean A, and proved that all the parameters diverges at t = − c1 nl , which emphasize this point as being a singular one. The aim of this set of lectures is a systematic presentation of a 1+3 covariant approach to studying the geometry, dynamics, and observational properties of relativistic cosmological models. In giving (i) the basic 1+3 covariant relations for a cosmological fluid, the present lectures cover some of the same ground as a previous set of Carg\`{e}se lectures \cite{ell73}, but they then go on to give (ii) the full set of corresponding tetrad equations, (iii) a classification of cosmological models with exact symmetries, (iv) a brief discussion of some of the most useful exact models and their observational properties, and (v) an introduction to the gauge-invariant and 1+3 covariant perturbation theory of almost-Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker universes, with a fluid description for the matter and a kinetic theory description of the radiation.

On the geometry of cosmological model building

This article analyzes the present anomalies of cosmology from the point of view of integrable Weyl geometry. It uses P.A.M. Dirac's proposal for a weak extension of general relativity, with some small adaptations. Simple models with interesting geometrical and physical properties, not belonging to the Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre class, are studied in this frame. Those with positive spatial curvature (Einstein-Weyl universes) go well together with observed mass density $\Omega_m$, CMB, supernovae Ia data, and quasar frequencies. They suggest a physical role for an equilibrium state of the Maxwell field proposed by I.E. Segal in the 1980s (Segal background) and for a time invariant balancing condition of vacuum energy density. The latter leads to a surprising agreement with the BF-theoretical calculation proposed by C. Castro (2002).

A note on cosmological parameters and the topology of the universe

Given the wealth of increasingly accurate cosmological observations, especially the recent results from the WMAP, and the development of methods and strategies in the search for cosmic topology, it is reasonable to expect that we should be able to detect the spatial topology of the Universe in the near future. Motivated by this, we examine to what extent a possible detection of a nontrivial topology of positively curved universe may be used to place constraints on the matter content of the Universe. We show through concrete examples that the knowledge of the spatial topology allows to place constraints on the density parameters associated to dark matter (Ω m) and dark energy (Ω Λ).
