ERP system implementation allows organisations to integrate different departments working in silos, while allowing them to have real-time business visibility and access to centralised information. ERP implementation is fraught with challenges and requires substantial resources and effort with no guarantee of success. The study of ERP implementation is limited mostly to developed countries, but the need for ERP implementation in developing countries is growing. However, many organisations are reluctant to adopt ERP systems, due to lack of implementation experience and fear of a failed implementation. To improve our understanding of what may lead to implementation failure in developing countries, this study adopts a case study research methodology to investigate a failed ERP implementation in a Middle Eastern country, and the critical success factors (CSFs) which contribute towards failure. The fi ndings identify factors, including country and organisational culture, lack of change management strategies, system choice, customisation, and internal politics as contributing towards implementation failure. This study provides insights into the role of CSFs in ERP implementation failure in developing countries. The critical factors identifi ed, appear to be correlated, meaning changes in one factor, will have an impact on another. The study provides organisational guidance for planning implementation strategy, based on the role of CSFs during implementation. Further, by drawing on the fi ndings, we relate how an organisation can better utilise and prioritise CSFs to avoid a failed implementation.

Critical Success Factors for Erp Implementation: Insights from a Middle-Eastern Country

The purpose of this paper is to explore the critical success factors (CSFs) of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementation in context of the developing countries. A survey questionnaire including the list and brief description of 17 CSFs of ERP implementation was designed and distributed among ERP adopter companies in Iran. Operational/functional/unit managers' perception about the criticality of these 17 CSFs was examined using frequency analysis and t-student test. All the 17 CSF were identified as significant factors for the successful ERP implementation in Iranian companies. Besides, comparative analysis of ou r findings indicated that results are consistent with findings of six prior researches in developing countries. The paper appears to be the first study to focus on the CSFs of ERP implementation in Iran. This study aims empirically to analyze the critical factors that impact the success of ERP system implementation in the public sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain and to clarify the benefits gained from the implementation. The study used a detailed questionnaire as a measuring instrument across the sample group to measure two main variables, the first being critical success factors (CSFs), and the second whether ERP implementation was successful or not. Implementing ERP in a Challenging Environment: The Case of a Palestinian Telecom Company

This paper explores how a company in the Palestinian territories managed to realise substantial benefits from an ERP system. The Palestinian context is quite challenging, with uncertainty and frequent changes in regulations. This study investigates what the company achieved from the system and what the company did to ensure such successful benefits realisation. Six areas were important to secure the potential benefits from the system. First, the company’s management was technology proficient and was able to understand the obstacles to realising the potential benefits. Second, the implementation proceeded with well‐managed changes. Third, the company established a long‐term business partnership with the implementation company. Fourth, the company surveyed similar companies’ experiences implementing ERP in several countries in the Middle East. Fifth, the company allocated significant time and resources for motivating employees. Sixth, the company allocated ample time for end user training.

Considerable customisation was required in both sectors, and the traditional style of management in Jordan did not fit well with the requirements for successful implementation. Critical Success Factors for ERP Implementation: The Case of Jordan

ERP systems are complex systems that face high probability of failure. Implementing such systems need careful planning and guarding against factors for failure. This study tried to explore the major key success factors (KSFs) that will turn the implementation process to a success. The study utilized 60 responses from managers and executives of local Jordanian companies in a pursuit for the highest KSFs in the Jordanian environment. Results are reported with conclusions and future work at the end of this paper.

A review of the literature on successful implementation of ERP reveals that there are many case studies undertaken by researches, but very few have empirically examined the success factors of ERP implementation. While most of those empirical studies were undertaken in Western countries, very few had examined the implementations in Middle Eastern countries and none in Saudi Arabia. Factors and challenges of ERP implementation in developing countries differ from those of Western countries. Hence a gap in the literature that examines Middle Eastern countries exists. This study is motivated to fill such gap by going beyond case study and boundaries of Western counties to empirically examine the determinants of successful ERP implementation in Saudi Arabia. The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of some critical factors on successful implementation of ERP.

Contributions of ERP systems in Jordan

Research in the area of information systems performance indicates contradictory results with respect to the value and gains of enterprise resource planning systems (ERP systems). Performance of information systems is measured in three main categories: efficiency, effectiveness and quality. This paper explores the value of ERP systems in the business environment and uses an empirical test to support the findings of this research. Six major predictors of the satisfaction level of managers using ERP systems are: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, financial improvements, operational improvements, quality of system, and quality of information. While all variables were significantly associated with satisfaction except financial improvements, results indicated a dominance of operational improvements and quality of information in influencing the satisfaction level when regressed together. Conclusions and future work are stated at the end.
