Technology in Education: Problem or Solution?

Over the years in the history of Education, Educational Technology has taken New Avatars from the Programmed Learning Movement to the present era of Web 2.0 Technologies and Social Media. By using Social Media Platforms such as Wikis, Blogs, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter in the classroom, teachers have seen an increase in achievement and classroom participation – even less sociable students have become more participatory. Tablets not only offer the present digital learners the chance to browse for information in quick fashions, but they also allow them to more easily collaborate on projects and become more engaged in their learning process. They have become exceptional tools that soon every classroom will strive to have. The Smartphones, like the tablet, have had different receptions. In addition to providing access to social media platforms which allow students to more freely interact, the Smartphones also provide easy access to useful information which betters a child’s overall learning experience. They also offer numerous apps designed to help students better budget their time and create more efficient schedules to complete their school work. Like never before, students are able to access any type of information about any subject matter through free web resources. They choose Khan Academy, YouTube, NROER, OER and numerous other forums which have bettered the learning experience and allowed student access to resources necessary to supplement their own education. Since the start of online programmes, anybody is able to pursue education anytime, anywhere. “With the emerging new technologies, the teaching profession is evolving from an emphasis on teacher-centered, lecture-based instruction to student-centered, interactive learning environments” (John Daniel, 2002). Today, the world of education stands loaded with unprecedented hope for a new paradigm of ‘anybody, anytime, anywhere learning’ through collaborative and constructive pedagogical models, thanks to the all-new web technologies. According to Douglas Kellner (2008), this technological revolution will have a greater impact on society than the transition from an oral to a print culture. George Siemens (2009) observed, “Technology is altering (rewiring) our brains. The tools we use define and shape our thinking”. Today’s teachers, whether in school or college are working with students whose entire lives have been immersed in the 21st century media culture.“The previous teaching practices of teacher directed, ‘chalk and talk’ no longer can engage the learner, nor can it provide the learner with the knowledge needed to connect and stay connected in this digital era (Siemens, O’Neill & Carr, 2008). The New York Times (2011) observed, “Learning, like culture, is a dynamic thing. It was an oral thing once, then it became a printed thing and is becoming a digital thing.” The much-hyped 21st century education is bold. It breaks the mold. It is flexible, creative, challenging, and complex.

This study seeks to understand the effects of technology on education: teaching and learning. All the data used in this study comes from secondary sources. Information was gathered from several sources, including peer-reviewed journal papers, published and unpublished dissertations, online and print textbooks, and encyclopaedias. Technology portrays a significant role in our life. It is possible only through technology that distances are no more barriers and education can bring to the student's doorstep. Technology has constantly improved every now and again, and there will be more people relying on technology. It will replace many things, and individuals' life will be easier. However, many persons are identifying the benefits of technology only and never examine their effects. Excessive usages of technology will transform people's ordinary life. Many negative effects of technology will affect humans' daily life like language skills, social life, and health. Although the application of ICT has assisted us in many fields, however, many people who do not perceive the fact that technology has negatively affected society.

Supporting diverse and rapidly changing learning styles of new digital age generations is a major hurdle in the age of massification of education markets. The institutions must now utilize the unprecedented network speed and mobile technology to stimulating learning environments for the new digital age generations. Institutions need to accommodate different learning styles of students often comprising of working professionals, different age groups and students from cultural backgrounds. Researchers have been trying solve these challenges through flexible learning and blended learning approaches. Faced with new digital age generations, unprecedented network speed and mobile technology, researchers now frequently quote mobilized curriculum, social-interaction oriented learning, personalized learning and collaborative mobile learning. Technology is getting more and more importance in our society. Technology is all around us whether we want it to be or not: it is the vehicles we drive, it can be found in our homes, gardens and can even be found even in the grocery store. Every place we look there is some type of technology. Widespread use of technology is changing the way we work, learn, and communicate-even the way we carry out our regular, daily activities. Technology usage is inevitable also in schools. Technology has changed the way classroom instructions are handled today. The teacher`s role has also changed from being the sole source of information to being the facilitator of learning. Student`s role has also changed from being receivers of spoon-fed information to being discovers of learning. This study the researcher will explore the positive and negative impacts of technology in education the study took place in the College of Arts and Sciences-Marj/ University of Benghazi in the Department of English. The researcher used one instrument for data collection which was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to fourteen teachers to have their opinions about impact of technology on students learning. The main results of questionnaire revealed that all teachers agreed on the fact that technology has a positive impact on education. The use of modern equipment technology and tools, the learning and interactivity of students increases. They also find it much more interactive, as well as full of interesting areas, when aided by technology. The use of technology has made the process of teaching and learning all the more enjoyable.

There has been little research conducted on e-reader devices and the effect they hold on learning. Also, the literature has demonstrated that there are more negative implications to using e-text in learning than there are positive. Understanding the role of e-reader devices in comprehension and transfer is a crucial component of expanding the literature. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of e-text, specifically on the iPad, on reading comprehension and transfer learning. Sixty nine students enrolled in an Introductory Psychology course read from textbooks and e-text and completed assessment measures in comprehension and transfer learning. Overall, the findings of this study provided support for the notion that there is a positive relationship between learning and reading on an e-text transfer scores when compared to traditional text.

Educational Technology relies on a broad definition of the word "technology". Technology can refer to material objects of use to humanity, such as machines or hardware, but it can also encompass broader themes, including systems, methods of organization, and techniques. Some modern tools include but are not limited to overhead projectors, laptop computers, and calculators. Newer tools such as "smart phones" and games (both online and offline) are beginning to draw serious attention for their learning potential. Media psychology is the field of study that applies theories in human behavior to educational technology.

The expansion of technological applications such as computers and mobile phones in the past three decades has impacted our lives from different perspectives. Educational contexts are no exceptions, and like other environments, they have also been influenced by new teaching sources and software. More recently, there has been a passionate debate about the usefulness of the smart-phones for educational purposes and their possible uses in educational instruction; therefore, in this chapter, a review of the current published literature focusing on the use of technology-based instruction by instructors or students was conducted. The results of the study demonstrated that technology-based instruction has significant effects on learners' achievements; however, there are some challenges such as social and technical barriers in blending technology and education in different educational contexts.
