The idea that economic behavior can be modelled as rational decision making, dates back to a famous work of Daniel Bernoulli (1738), who explained the limited willingness to engage in gambles on the basis of utility maximization. From this inception, a progressive expansion of the theory of rationality has accompanied a large part of the development of economic analysis during the XIX and the XX century. At the height of his success, culminated with the publication of Theory of Games and Economic Behavior by von Neumann and Morghenstern in 1947, the status of the theory as the microfoundations of economic analysis was seriously called into question. The most important challenges to the theory date in fact to the 1950s, with Allais's paradox (1952) and the empirical study of decision processes in firms conducted by Cyert, Simon and Trow in 1956. On the one hand Simon's approach was criticising, on the basis of field experiments, the scarce realism of the economic theory based on the neo-classical assumption of "olimpyan" rationality, and suggesting the idea of bounded rationality. On the other, the pioneering works by Allais on expected utility theory violations, proved the systematic discrepancy between the predictions of the theory and real behavior in the context of risk . Together with the early experimental studies by John Nash and Reinhard Selten, Maurice Allais' works on rational decision making were at the origin of experimental economics: new sophisticated methods for controlled laboratory experiments grew from their early experiments, and a large set of new experiments extraordinarily reinforced the evidence of the discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and the real human behaviors. The traditional decision making theory therefore appeared more and more analytically poor and insufficient to explain the wide variety of intelligent human behaviors. In Simon' words:

The Sensory Order, Neuroeconomics, and Austrian Economics

In the social science literature spawned by Hayek's The Sensory Order, the questions asked were In what ways does Hayek's cognitive theory fit with his social theory and with Austrian Economics in general?, and (2) Do we need The Sensory Order at all to do our social science and how does it make a difference in providing insight toward understanding the social realm? We survey this literature and, by drawing out the ramifications both from Hayek's work on epistemology and psychology and the ongoing experimental investigations of individual economic behavior, we point to the possibility of a coherent new view of economic and other social systems in which individuals have realistic capabilities, where emergent effects are recognized as macro phenomena which supervene on micro activity rather than being simply reducible to it, and where systemic characteristics such as adaptation and knowledge generation are given their due.

The integration of learning cognitive agents in the research agenda is an important step in the evolution of economics. However, relying on a retrospective analysis of the treatment of decision making in economics, this article argues that the cognitive programme aims to justify rational behaviour in an equilibrium framework rather than to integration an interpretative conception of agents' behaviour. As a consequence, the level of generality of analytical results remains limited and economists miss the opportunity to establish a discussion with other social sciences. In particular, it fails to analyse a class of situations related to the problem of knowledge creation and the subsequent learning paradox. Building on recent advances in heterodox cognitive science, we suggest a behavioural approach that discriminates different learning situations. If applied, this approach would permit a better understanding of human behaviour and a richer analysis of coordination mechanisms in unfamiliar environment with no loss of rigour.

The paper reviews that limitations of the neo-classical economics paradigm in dealing with information: focus on individual rationality, static view of the world, unduly parsimonious characterization of the world of cognition. Then it sketches the contours of an alternative paradigm built on selective rationality, imperfect mental representations, cognitive structures as filters, and an adoption/adaptation dynamics: selection mechanisms adopting certain representations, rationales and conventions, but rules and patterns also adapting to the evolving milieu. The new evolutionary cognitive paradigm is shown to be pregnant with new insights into the structure and functioning of modern economies but also likely to generate some reformulation in our policy prescriptions Classification code: Introduction An economic system is a set of conversations, rationales, protocols, conventions, organizations and institutions providing the coordination and the orientation maps to ensure a viable process of production, allocation and distribution of goods, services and information for a population. Economic Mind: From Attribution Error to Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

I argue in this text that the economic mind is a culturally hegemonic, naturalistic interpretation of the behavior produced by the revolutionary nature of the economic and technical developments of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Despite persistent criticism, people fulfilled the predictions of the economic model of a human being for so long that they committed an attribution error and took it to be the adequate vision of human nature. Neoclassical economic theory played a significant, even if involuntary, role in the spread of this illusion. I also claim that the concept of economic mind—as the dominant interpretation of human nature—currently functions as a self-fulfilling prophecy, reproducing behaviors that would have a chance to change (refuting the theory developed on their basis), were it not for the popularity of this concept as commonsensical definition of human nature.

A History of the Fall and the Rise of Economics with Psychology

This paper is an attempt to make a rational reconstruction of ideas about the ties that bind economics and psychology together. Its aim is to offer a clearer understanding of the fall and the revival of analytical economic models with explicit behavioral assumptions. It advances the thesis that two methodological problems largely explain why economists from the late 19 th century and until the 1980s tried hard to construct models of choice freed from psychology. One problem concerns the difficulty in measuring (cardinal) utility; another refers to the philosophical implications of developing an economic approach to behavior committed to the questionable doctrine of hedonism. In addition, the current work suggests that two different methodological puzzles contribute to the revival of psychological economics, also known as behavioral economics. Hayek's The Sensory Order is an intriguing book. The essence of the book was contained in a paper he had written in 1921. Thereafter Hayek became busy in economics and only in the late 1940s, when public interest in his economic theories faded away, did he find the time to finish it. It was published in 1952, more than thirty years after he first conceived it. It essentially comprises Hayek's criticism of the psychology of perception and the philosophy of mind from before 1918, both of which were dominated by the ideas of Ernst Mach. In 1952 Hayek added to his former criticism of Mach new objections to behaviourism and Gestalt theory. The most important chapters are the first, the second and the last. In the first chapter Hayek states the mind-body problem and related epistemological problems of perception in a way which remains unsurpassed. In the second chapter he presents his solution to these problems. He describes his model of the human mind and the mechanisms of perception in very general (functionalistic) terms. In the last chapter he summarizes the philosophical consequences of his model. In the chapters in between he guesses, on the basis of existing physiological literature from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, how the human mind and human perception are physiologically realized. This part has, of course, been superseded by modern neurophysiology. But in 1952 Hayek's physiological speculations were amazingly modern for someone who was not a professional neuropsychologist or psychophysiologist. Hayek was an outsider. Therefore he did not know D.O. Hebb's Organization of Behaviour (1949) until the final version of his own book was practically finished. Hebb's vision was in so many respects similar to his own that Hayek doubted for a while whether he should publish it. However, Hebb was more concerned with physiological details and less with general principles, which were Hayek's main interest. Hayek thought Hebb did not formulate the general principles as clearly as might have been possible.

Although macroeconomic processes are present in collective and individual life, with their significant socio-historical effects and consequences, they have not received due attention from analytical psychology, remaining dissociated and on the margins of analytical elaborations. This article is the result of research since 2018 on economic topics that resulted in the discovery of the Swiss economist prof. Eugen Böhler and his partnership with C. G. Jung as early as 1938 when Jung joined the ETH and especially from 1955 to 1961 when he produced essays and books involving the myths. Critical of the abstract and rational models that still permeate economic discussions today, Böhler was the one who introduced the presence of unconscious factors to understand the complexity of economic factors. Böhler sought tirelessly move out of from Logos towards Mito (Mythos). We understand, along with M. D. Ronca and Y.Demierre, that Eugen Böhler was the first Jungian Economist.

The very idea of a borderland of causal connections between the great branches of learning is typically dismissed by social theorists and philosophers as reductionistic. This diagnosis is of course quite correct. But consider this: Reduction and the consilience it implies are the key to the success of the natural sciences. Why should the same not be true of other kinds of knowledge? Because mind and culture are material processes, there is every reason to suppose, and none compelling enough to deny, that the social sciences and humanities will be strengthened by assimilation of the borderland disciplines. Psychologizing Economic Man: Foundational Problems of Economics and Cognitive Science

This is a philosophical study of economics and cognitive psychology as sciences of human behaviour. Boundaries and interactions of the two sciences are examined with a close look at the experimental studies on judgement and decision making, and on strategic interaction in games. I argue, against conceptual scepticism, that not only is a science of human behaviour possible, but it is exemplified by both economics and psychology, which have been striving to measure decision-relevant psychological quantities and explain the behavioural anomalies that have emerged as a result of theoretical and empirical progress in measurement and experimentation. The dialectics of ‘crises and responses’ involved in this process reveals various ways in which representations, models and experiments are employed in the laboratory.
