Inspired by how shadows modulate with the shifting angle of twilight light.

The study of pupils' representations of physics concepts and phenomena constitutes a central part of Science Education research, as they play a decisive role in teaching. In the study presented here, we investigate 212 fifth grade pupils' mental representations of the formation of shadows, before they were taught about it in school. The empirical data was gathered through an interview using four tasks which involved the evaluation of hypothetical situations. The research data included representations that cause difficulty in the comprehension of the position of a light source in relevance to the shadow.

It is demonstrated that the presence of a moving cast shadow diminishes the Pulfrich phenomenon. This complements previous work by Kersten, Knill, Mamassian, and Bülthoff [1996 Nature (London)379 31] indicating that visible cast shadows can override monocularly based cues to the perceived trajectory of a moving object. The present finding with the Pulfrich phenomenon indicates the effectiveness of shadows for overriding binocularly based cues to the perceived trajectory of a moving object.
Luminal art uses light as medium for expression through its faculty to reshape space. This research is inspired by the intuitive engagement present in the structures and principles of music for the composition of kinetic sculptures using light as material, without the involvement of sound. It presents my personal exploration of theoretical foundations and practical experiments to elucidate my relationship with the medium, mediated by the development of a framework for luminal art in space. The thesis outlines the construction of a luminous instrument and the arrangement of a spatial light composition as case study. The results may provide groundwork and guidance to other artists or practitioners interested in the present field.

An expanding object, which may represent an approaching motion, is easier to detect than a contracting one, which may represent a receding object. To confirm the generality of asymmetry in the detection of approaching and receding motions, we focused on the perception of apparent motion in depth created by moving cast shadows. The visual search for an approaching target among receding distractors was more efficient than for the opposite condition (Experiment 1). However, this asymmetry disappeared when a light shadow was added (Experiments 2 and 3). This suggests that the visual system is specialized to detect approaching motion defined by cast shadows, as well as other three-dimensional cues such as expanding motion and shading.
Clear sky and high intensity of solar energy is one of the specifics of hot climates. Producing shadow in open areas and passages is a very effective element to cool environment and reduce temperature in such conditions. For 2/3 to 3/4 periods of a year shadow is necessary in hot climates, which is the reason of innovating manifest samples of vernacular umbrageous architecture. To following this culture and to create umbrageous new architecture these questions are propounded: 1. How is it possible to distinguish shadow need periods during a year in a specific climate? 2. How is it possible to produce shadow in hot periods without being deprived of pleasant sunshine in cold periods? Using shading mask of Olgyay this article will introduce a method that will help architects: to determine shadow need periods according to climatic considerations, to design sunshade for hot periods and to evaluate its efficiency in a pattern year.
