Bibster—a semantics-based bibliographic Peer-to-Peer system

Bibster is a semantics-based Peer-to-Peer system for exchanging bibliographic data among researchers. Bibster exploits ontologies in data storage, query formulation, query routing and answer presentation. While the original Bibster system assumed a globally shared domain ontology, we here describe extensions to the Bibster system, that allow to learn personalized ontologies from the local bibliographic metadata. These personal ontologies can not only be used for subsequently classifying the bibliographic metadata, but also for supporting an improved query refinement process.

We present a system called "OntoZilla", which combines ontologies and peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, with a vision of improving the information search process and facilitating greater integration as well as interoperability. In OntoZilla, peers supporting the same concept are grouped into the same cluster, and the relationships between clusters are modeled according to the concepts they specialize in. Therefore, a query belonging to a specific concept can be routed to the suitable group of peers in a systematic way, thus supporting efficient concept search. Moreover, since peer relationships are based on peers' expertises which may change over time, our semi-structured system can flexibly cope with the changing environment as peers evolve.

We are in the midst of radical changes in the way that scholars produce, share, and access the results of their work and that of their colleagues. In the past several years we have seen dramatic growth in the deployment of scholarly repositories including institutional repositories [15], data set repositories, and others. These increasingly populated repositories are interconnected by a nascent interoperability framework based on standards such as OAI-PMH [23] and OpenURL [19], which are the result of previous work by the authors of this proposal. Yet, the developments we have seen thus far are certainly just the tip of the iceberg, and the technical infrastructure is still rather primitive. In an earlier publication [24] we proposed a more advanced notion of a scholarly communication system that would fully compliment the way that scholars work. Such a system would allow flexible composition of information units-text, data sets, images, etc.-and distributed services for the formation of new types of published results and new methods of collaborating. This would be a loosely coupled system based on an interoperability fabric where the units of scholarly communication could follow a variety of scholarly value chains. In such a proposed system each hub provides a service such as registering results, certifying their validity, alerting scholars to new claims and findings, preserving the scholarly record, and ultimately rewarding scholars for their work.

OpenCitations is an independent not-for-profit infrastructure organization for open scholarship dedicated to the publication of open bibliographic and citation data by the use of Semantic Web (Linked Data) technologies. OpenCitations collaborates with projects that are part of the Open Science ecosystem and complies with the UNESCO founding principles of Open Science, the I4OC recommendations, and the FAIR data principles that data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. Since its data satisfies all the Reuse guidelines provided by FAIR in terms of richness, provenance, usage licenses and domain-relevant community standards, OpenCitations provides an example of a successful open e-infrastructure in which the reusability of data is integral to its mission.

The MINERVA project is a distributed search engine prototype based on a Peer-to-Peer architecture. The MINERVA provides a functionality to search for documents from the selected top-k peers who have the most possibility to contain documents corresponding to the user specified query. In some cases, users may want to know information about the document such as bibliographic information or user recommendation in order to justify the value of the document before they really reach the document. In this thesis, we study about extending the MINERVA system to support the bibliographic information search or recommendation search in the shape of attribute value based search. In our design, we specify each bibliographic information entry or recommendation entry as an attribute value of the document. In the emerging eScience environment, repositories of papers, datasets, software, etc., should be the foundation of a global and natively-digital scholarly communications system. The current infrastructure falls far short of this goal. Cross-repository interoperability must be augmented to support the many workflows and value-chains involved in scholarly communication. This will not be achieved through the promotion of single repository architecture or content representation, but instead requires an interoperability framework to connect the many heterogeneous systems that will exist.

In order to identify the existence of an ontology of dependability, we conducted a bibliographic review. However, we encountered a real problem while researching and selecting articles that address this issue. Indeed the research process in various scientific databases with standard techniques involve the application of a number of manual and duplicative steps. This makes it a fairly costly and faulty process. To surmount these challenges, we offer a solution that automates search and selection items. The proposed solution is essentially derived from the popular method called systematic mapping. In this article, we suggest a Web Service as an implementation of our proposed approach. This Web Service will allow users to query scientific databases to obtain the metadata of selected articles. Our proposal will make the selection of scientific articles easier and faster.
