Two Silver Ingots from the Mid-Fourth Century AD

The sixth consecutive volume of the catalogue of the collection of ancient coins in the Ossoliński National Institute appeared after a twelve-year long break and thirty years after the publication of the first volume. It gathers the Roman Imperial coins from years 193-235 represented in the collection. There are 302 coins catalogued, including official, unofficial and imitative coins, as well as modern coins in the Severan type. Metallurgical analyses of seven coins are reported and interpreted in the annexes by three different Authors. Two of these coin are East Germanic imitations of aurei. One of them is the runic imitation of aureus of Severus Alexander presented in the seperate paper accessible in Academia.edu. The history of the collection (dating back to 1828) and the individual coins is reconstructed thanks to the research started with the archival queries to my PhD thesis in 2008 and continued until now. This study presents the first evidence for a millennium celebration of the foundation of Byzantion, the city re-named Constantinopolis by Constantine I. An emission of silver donatives consists of miliarense and siliquae carrying the letter M, interpreted here to stand for the 1,000 years celebration, dated here to 333/334 CE. Supplementing the author’s previous publications of the silver emissions produced for the inauguration of Constantinopolis in 330 CE, a complete revision of all other Constantinian silver emissions from the city is presented, based on the 199 specimens known today. A review is given of Constantine’s evolving hair style, which is an important chronological indicator. i.e. changes in hair style are followed from 330 to 335 CE in the five bronze coinage emissions of Rome, and a revision and new chronology of these emissions are given. Completing the revision of all silver emissions from Constantinopolis under Constantine I, evidence is presented for the four remaining groups: the NOB CAESS medallions are made of bronze, not silver; the Constantiniana dafne gold and silver specimens are all forgeries; the authenticity of the Hanniballianus silver is questionable; and the AVGVSTVS/CAESAR medallions are not from Constantinopolis, but some are from Rome. Finally, the reasons why Eusebius abruptly discontinued his Chronicles in 326 are discussed, and Jerome’s contributions 40 years later for the 276th Olympiad are identified.

In this study, we provide the results of a micro-XRF archaeometric investigation of 87 Roman silver coins of different types that were discovered in Plovdiv (Central South Bulgaria) as part of coin hoard. 593 Roman coins dating from the middle of the second century AD to the middle of the third century AD comprise the hoard. The primary purpose of this report is to determine the amount of silver in the alloy, as well as the amounts of other elements. A micro-XRF spectrometer was used for the non-destructive analysis. The results indicate that the coins struck from the middle of the second to the middle of the third century AD included varying amounts of the following key elements: silver, copper, lead, and tin. Archaeometric study sheds light on the state's economy during the relevant periods, as well as on coin manufacture and circulation technologies inside the Roman Empire. On the basis of statistical estimation and correlation analysis, several interesting observations are made about the technologies utilized and the origins of silver ores.

The microstructure of three silver coins dating back to the IIIrdcentury B.C. from the Illyrian King Monounios, the ancient Greek city of Dyrrachion and the ancient Greek city of Korkyra was studied with XRF, PIXE, microhardness measurements, and light and electron microscopy. From this investigation it turned out that these coins have different chemical compositions and different microstructures. The as-collected data allow the determination of a possible minting method. The Korkyra coin was probably hot-worked or cold-worked and annealed, while after cooling, it was cold-worked again. The coin of King Monounios is composed by equi-axed grains which are overrun by slip lines. Consequently it is likely that this coin was casted and then cold-struck. Finally the coin from Dyrrachion is characterized by small-sized grains and strain lines and as a result this coin was probably cold-struck.
