Social justice is the spirit and vision of the Indian Constitution. It is the duty of the state to secure a social order in which the legal system of the nation promotes justice on the basis of equal opportunity and, in particular, ensures that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities. This article makes an attempt to explore Ambedkar's ideas on social justice. Thereafter, it focuses on Ambedkar's struggles and ideas on social justice in the Indian context and it finally explores the relevance of his mission for social justice in the present times.

In India's 2019 legislative elections, Mayawati Kumari, a Dalit woman and former chief minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), has been a major and fierce opponent of prime minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Whether or not citizens support her politics, Kumari has set an example and shown the success of a long-standing anti-caste and Dalit movements. Although caste and male domination coupled with hyper-Hindu nationalism currently guide politics in India, these subversive movements have been successful in creating a dent. Today, as India is about to elect a new government, how do these movements improve social justice in the country and play a role in the political game?

In Indian electoral elections, Uttar Pradesh is one of those states that has witnessed a significant emergence of Dalit political awareness in past few decades. Yet in the current electoral climate, they have only been a passing cloud, which further necessitates an overhaul in their political leadership and style of politics. It is in this regard that a discussion on the alternatives for the Dalit politics becomes more important than ever. In such a discussion, one leader who cannot be overlooked is Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’. Thus, this commentary aims to address the question, what should this alternative represent?

This course explores how caste was politicized over the course of colonial and post-colonial periods in India. It focuses on the emergence and development of various movements opposed to caste-based inequality and injustice, as well as the ongoing search for social justice. The course reviews scholarly debates about understanding this form of identification and social hierarchy, and examines the complex ways in which caste articulates with other social phenomena, like gender, class, religion, and nationality. It lays emphasis on the writings and work of key anti-caste thinkers and activists, in particular, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the preeminent leader of the Dalits, and a key figure in drafting the Constitution of India. Based on close readings of various kinds of primary sources, as well as an engagement with secondary literature in history, political science, sociology, anthropology and literary studies, the course follows the story of the struggle to “annihilate” caste.

This article argues that a section of mainstream media is downplaying the significance of the victory of Chandrashekhar Azad from Nagina. He is the "Naya Sawera'" of the Bahujan/Dalit politics. An icon of the Bahujan politics has been born. He is the darling of the Bahujan masses, especially the youth. He has acquired the image of the Che Guevara of the Dalit politics in India. His victory is bound to change the future political dynamics of Uttar Pradesh.

Tow central features of Dalit politics come from Ambedkar. One, the creation of public spaces at different levels for which the tools applied were electoral politics, reservation, protest movements, creation of texts and celebration of Dalit history from below. Second, he not only studied the untouchables and victims but also attacked and unfolded the strategies of the oppressor i.e. dominant castes, and the continuous heterogenous reproduction of the structure of caste. Thus, the creation and spread of Dalit public sphere is the most essential feature of Dalit politics needs which is the future’s history of Dalit Politics

The earliest, though not the first, uses of the term ‘dalit’are to be found in Ambedkar’s writings. 1 Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891–1956), the major ideological source of today’s dalit politics in India, conceived the category ‘Broken Men’(a literal translation of the Marathi word dalit) in his attempt to reconstruct the history of the untouchables in India. Taking a cue from Maxim Gorky’s ideas on the shared space between science and literature, Ambedkar believed that historiography was not a practice defined by the primacy of archival evidence; rather it is a creative art, and history, a work of art. 2 He tried to grasp the reasons for the Hindu–untouchable divide as a product of the historical dialectic.

Post-Ambedkarite movements for dalit liberation in India have had diverse currents. In India, the assertion of the Bahujan Samaj Party has begun a new period of democratisation, while the rising of dalit castes via Buddhist conversion has brought about societal upheaval in Maharashtra. Yet, both these different occurrences suffer from the drawbacks of not addressing fundamental concerns identified by Ambedkar. This dissertation aims to synthesize a model out of the dialectics of the socio-political movements in Maharashtra and India from the vantage point of Ambedkarite philosophy.
