2025, Nepean District Historical Society Bulletin,.87, September

Abstract

First contact between the European arrivals and the indigenous peoples on the east coast of Australia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries makes for fascinating study. The meeting of two very different cultures provide vignettes of confusion, misunderstanding and culture shock. This brief paper looks at how matters of gender identity were resolved in some first contact situations between Europeans and Indigenous Australians in South Eastern Australia between (1788 -1802).
