Abstract

The exponential growth of the Internet since the mid-1990s has greatly expanded the capacity of people everywhere to interconnect and engage through digital technologies. As a complex adaptive system of systems, the Internet has extended the range and complexity of phenomena of interest to Information Systems (IS) scholars. This is both an exciting opportunity and a challenge which we explore in this paper by revisiting the Intellectual Structures Framework (Hirshheim et al. 1996) which attempted to make sense of the fragmented adhocracy of IS, before the expansion and penetration of the Internet. We suggest that the IS adhocracy, with its multi-disciplinary and systems-oriented nature, gives IS researchers the requisite variety to contend with the increasingly diverse digital ecologies of IS-enabled human activities that have emerged in the ensuing two decades. Back to Basics: Exploring the Critical Legacy of IS Research

The main assumption in this paper is that there are important, unfamiliar and obscure qualities of information technology as it intertwines with people's everyday life. That is, aspects that so far and to a large extent has escaped critical scrutiny. It is also tentatively suggested that these unknown qualities are being prevented from critical examinations as long as we pursue investigations based on design and/or use perspectives. In this paper a tentative response to the request for new perspectives on critical research is formulated. The response is based on my assessment of Critical Theory and Critical Theory of Technology where an aesthetic understanding is suggested to alter our critical sense of how people today form meaningfulness by, through and with information technology. So, without neglecting other commonly held critical positions this paper tentatively concludes that an understanding of the reflexive nature of information technology in conjunction with the basic spirit behind the Frankfurt School empower critical IS researchers with a new sensibility for what might constitute contemporary critical concerns.

Desperately Seeking the Infrastructure in IS Research: Conceptualization of "Digital Convergence" As Co-Evolution of Social and Technical Infrastructures

Large scale penetration of digital technologies led them to join roads, electricity, and water distribution, as essential infrastructures of modernity. "Digital convergence" refers to these technologies' wide ranging effects on people's lives, work, and interactions. Yet conceptions from diverse fields reveal no universally accepted understanding of this term. An examination of historical developments leading up to the Internet era reveals mutual dependence between technical infrastructures and diverse social arrangements including industry, regulatory, and market structures. A set of criteria for the definition of digital convergence (and divergence) is formulated. These provide a working definition that reveals the essential, pervasive and interactive reconfiguration of modern society's technical and social infrastructures due to digitization. A layer-based model is presented as one possible way of breaking up an increasingly interconnected socio-technical world into separate domains that allow meaningful study. We call for action to address the paucity of recent Information Systems (IS) research into the infrastructures that provide the foundations upon which all modern information systems build.

Conceptualizing Information Systems: From ‘Input-Processing-Output’ Devices to sociomaterial apparatuses

This paper examines the concepts of Information System (IS) – central to the IS discipline – with the aim to contribute to the debate on the nature of the concept and stimulate broader engagement of the IS community. To achieve this aim the paper identifies and critically examines common place conceptions of IS in the literature and also those most explicitly and clearly presented in IS textbooks. IS are commonly seen as devices that represent reality by collecting and processing data and thereby producing information. Such a model of IS as an ‘input-processing-output’ device that represents reality is grounded in a representational philosophy. Based on a critical assessment of the representational view of information and IS the paper puts forward an alternative performative view founded on agential realism (Barad, 2007). According to this view any observation of the world is mediated by devices, that is, grounded in particular interactions with and translations of the world through devices, which therefore form an integrative part of observed phenomena. Following the performative view, the paper proposes and articulates a new concept of IS as 'apparatus' defined as sociotechnical entanglement of IT artefact, work practices, users, and developers. Theoretical and practical implications of understanding IS as apparatuses are discussed.

Design as Reification, Commodification, and Ideology: A Critical View of IS Design Science

The discourse on design science in information systems purports to offer an alternative to the currently dominant discourse on behavioural science. It suggests that information systems are concerned with the social and organisational use of technological artefacts. While research on the social side of these is well established, the understanding of their technical development is less advanced. In this paper I suggest a very different reading of the design science discourse by applying some ideas of critical theory to the discourse. From the critical perspective one can interpret the design science discourse as an attempt to create legitimacy for a particular view of information systems. Such purposive discourses are not problematic per se but they can be detrimental to the main aim of critical research, namely emancipation. Keeping pace with the digital age: Envisioning information systems research as a platform

In this paper, we respond to Grover and Lyytinen (2022). We agree with them that the advent of the digital age is calling for a reconsideration of the role of theory and theorizing. We also think their proposal does not go far enough. The time is ripe to question the role of theory in our field more fundamentally. We propose to instead focus on establishing IS research as a platform through which we can collect, organize, and provide access to digital trace data from various sources to analyze contemporary socio-technical phenomena. We believe that such a move allows us to more fully unleash the unique sociotechnical competences of our field in the digital age.

Revisiting the Nature of Information Systems: The Urgent Need for a Crisis in IS Theoretical Discourse

This paper suggests that the emergence of large scale integrated business and financial information systems is another aspect of the deconstruction of financial and business realities into a simulacrum. It draws largely upon Baudrillard"s theory of modern society and how this society processes and exploits information in an ever increasing vortex of non-information. IS and management literature argues that large scale information systems such as ERP systems and supply chain integration systems are an important step forward for financial information processing because they integrate the disparate units of business information into a coherent whole. However, whilst this is a very tantalising vision, the reality on the ground seems to be different. This paper posits a theoretical position which adopts neither the traditional positivist, decision theory approach nor the social constructivist theories in which the IS is seen as a primarily social system. Instead the work of French Deconstructivists is used to interpret empirical data gathered by the researcher in a new way suggesting radical new trajectories for information systems research.

Introduction: Applying Critical Theory to the Study of ICT

A s three academics located in the domain of information systems (IS), we are delighted to act as guest editors and to highlight scholarship that applies a critical lens to the examination of information and communication technologies (ICT). In this editorial, we briefly present how reference disciplines-particularly sociology-have addressed issues of technology in society, placing this discussion in the context of the comparatively new disciplinary field of IS and its paradigmatic roots. We argue that IS has been dominated by inquiry adopting the philosophical approach of positivism but stress that there is a small and growing body of theoretical and empirical research from a critical perspective. We discuss this broadening field of critical research and critical research in IS in particular. Finally, we are pleased to introduce the articles we have chosen for this special issue that apply critical theories and methods to a number of ICT applications. Looking back at the entirety of sociology as a discipline, studying the role of technology in society has been marginal at best. Although never central to their doctrine, Marx, Weber, and Parsons all noted that technology played an instrumental role in society, subordinate to economic action, effectively a means to an economic end (Shields, 1997). With the arrival of the Frankfurt School in the mid-20th century, the study of the role of technology in society merged with the burgeoning field of critical theory, in which technology was part of a critique of modernity and the developments and institutions associated with modern society. For sociologists, critical theory allied technology with modernity and again viewed it instrumentally, as a tool of the modern state used for more perfect subjugation of the masses and the individual. In the later half of the 20th century, sociologists have drawn on authors such as Habermas, Offe, Bourdieu, Foucault, Calhoun, and Kellner to develop a more sophisticated critique of domination with an emancipatory interest, the fusion of social or cultural analysis, and the role of technology in society. Critical theorists of technology are typically seen by sociologists as mild technological determinists who have focused on the coevolution of modernity and technology and their joint limitations, pathologies, and destructive effects (Kellner, 1989). The Discipline of IS In the context of how ICTs are viewed and studied in IS, it is useful to take a little time to discuss the emerging discipline of IS-a subject of contestation within the IS community.

Through this chapter we provide an overview of the sociotechnical premise: the mutual constitution of people and technologies. The sociotechnical premise and its various approaches, including the seminal work of the Tavistock scholars, the Nordic and Scandic approaches, and their evolution, are developed as the historical basis of this work. In the chapter we also cover the role of sociological thinking, the contributions of science and technology studies and social construction/social shaping of technology, actor network theories, and contemporary approaches. The chapter concludes with a cursory review of current debates around economic sociology, multidimensional networks and advancing our current conceptualization of the digital artifact.

New State of Play in Information Systems Research: The Push to the Edges

The dominant way of producing knowledge in information systems (IS) seeks to domesticate high-level reference theory in the form of mid-level abstractions involving generic and atheoretical information technology (IT) components. Enacting such epistemic scripts squeezes IS theory to the middle range, where abstract reference theory concepts are directly instantiated or slightly modified to the IS context, whereas IT remains exogenous to theory by being treated as an independent variable, mediator, or moderator. In this design, IT is often operationalized using proxies that detect the presence of IT or its variation in use or cost. Our analysis of 143 articles published in MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research over the past 15 years demonstrates that over 70 percent of published theory conforms to this mode of producing IS knowledge. This state of play has resulted in two negative consequences: the field (1) agonizes over the dearth of original and bold theorizing over IT and (2) satisfices when integrating theory with empirics by creating incommensurate mid-range models that are difficult to consolidate. We propose that one way to overcome these challenges is to critically examine and debate the negative impacts of the field's dominant epistemic scripts and relax them by permitting IS scholarship that more fluidly accommodates alternative forms of knowledge production. This will push IS inquiry to the "edges" and emphasize, on the one hand, inductive, rich inquiries using innovative and extensive data sets and, on the other hand, novel, genuine, high-level theorizing around germane conceptual relationships between IT, information and its (semiotic) representations, and social behaviors. We offer several exemplars of such inquiries and their results. To promote this push, we invite alternative institutionalized forms of publishing and reviewing. We conclude by inviting individual scholars to be more open to practices that permit richer theorizing. These recommendations will broaden the field's knowledge ecology and permit the creation of good IS knowledge over just getting "hits." We surmise that, if such changes are carried out, the field can look confidently toward its future as one of the epicenters of organizational inquiry that deal with the central forces shaping human enterprise in the 21 st century.

Theorizing Society and Technology in Information Systems Research

The world around us is unpredictably changing at a dramatic pace and technology plays an increasingly important, yet ambiguous, role in these global social changes. Is should actively engage with the phenomena that society is changing with and through ICT. To date IS research is mostly interested in technological artifacts and behavioral aspects associated with ICT. We, as IS scholars, have to find theoretical approaches to help us to make sense of and better understand the broader societal and organizational changes related to ICT. We argue that Ou Yang outlines two relational approaches to sensemaking, extending our conceptual and analytical toolkits through the works of Martin Heidegger and Marshall McLuhan. This paper provides a discussion of her contribution in relation to the current debate on sociomateriality.

    A Scientometric Analysis of COVID-19 and Social Media Marketing

    This study gives a comprehensive picture of various trends of worldwide scientific research on the impact of COVID-19 on social media marketing from 2019 to early 2022. Relevant articles were retrieved from the Scopus database using specific keywords, and a bibliometric analysis was performed in Biblioshiny, an R-based software package. An examination of a total of 603 papers on the themes 'COVID-19' and 'social media marketing' indicated reasonably good collaboration among authors and a whooping scientific production worldwide in the last two years. Bina Nusantara University was the highest contributor to the chosen theme used in the study. Indonesia topped the list in single country publications. The UK had the highest multiple country publication. The UK, China, Spain, and India were the most cited countries. The output of the study may help the researchers and marketers understand the trending areas in social media marketing during COVID-19.
