Abstract

The Cathedral Archives, Libraries and Collections Association (CALCA) plays a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the rich cultural and ecclesiastical heritage of Anglican cathedral libraries across the UK and Ireland. Affiliated with the Association of English Cathedrals (AEC), which represents 42 Anglican cathedrals and royal peculiars, CALCA oversees the management, cataloguing, and public engagement of these historic collections. These libraries, dating back to the medieval period, house diverse materials including medieval manuscripts, early printed books, and records spanning theology, science, medicine, and local history. Notable examples include Canterbury Cathedral’s extensive collection, Hereford’s chained library with the Mappa Mundi, and Wells Cathedral’s rare 1472 Pliny’s Naturalis Historiae. The Cathedral Libraries Catalogue, a significant project by the Bibliographical Society, documents over 25,000 pre-1701 books, highlighting their intellectual breadth beyond theology. In 2025, CALCA will award its Gold Medal to Dr. David Shaw for his distinguished contributions to bibliography, particularly through his work on the Cathedral Libraries Catalogue and publications on French and English printing history.
