How Much Freedom Should a Teen Have

Abstract

Teenage years are often considered a formative period that shapes an individual's personality, values, and decision-making abilities. While freedom is seen as a vital component of personal growth, excessive liberty or restrictive parenting can negatively impact adolescents' mental and emotional well-being. This study investigates the degree of freedom teenagers should have, with particular focus on the role of parent-child relationships. Data was collected through online questionnaires distributed to both parents and teenagers. Results indicate a significant communication gap between parents and adolescents, leading teenagers to rely more on peers for emotional support. Findings suggest that balanced freedom-supported by trust, boundaries, and open communication-contributes positively to self-esteem and responsible behavior in teenagers.
