Gendered Experience of Disability
2025, Research Paper
Abstract
Society often sees people with disabilities as different from the norm, leading to a history of treating them as less than human. This disadvantage is even more pronounced for women with disabilities. They face a constant uphill battle against societal and family barriers. Violence, marginalization, and injustice are sadly common in their daily lives. Additionally, lack of resources for proper care, support, and opportunities for economic advancement further hinders their progress. Even though international laws protect their access to healthcare, education, and work, ingrained prejudice and negative stereotypes create major obstacles for girls and women with disabilities. This paper explores the consequences of prejudice against both disability and gender, and how gender shapes the experience of disability.
