Epidemiology of Non-Neurogenic Urinary Dysfunction

To determine the age-speci¢c prevalence rates of di¡erent types of urinary incontinence in women with urinary symptoms using urodynamic studies (UDS). Methods: One thousand ¢ve hundred women with urinary symptoms who underwent UDS in our department from January 1997 through December 1999 were enrolled. A detailed history, physical examination, and data of multichannel UDS including uro£owmetry, ¢lling and voiding cystometry, stress urethral pressure pro-¢le, and 20-minute pad test were obtained for each patient. The urodynamic ¢ndings of each patient were analyzed and correlated with age in decades. Results: Of 1,500 women, 329 were excluded from analysis because they had undergone anti-incontinence surgery (n ¼ 27), had undergone treatment for cervical cancer (n ¼ 147), or were being followed-up after medication (n ¼ 155). Of the remaining 1,171 patients, 656 (56%) had genuine stress incontinence (GSI), 68 (5.8%) had detrusor instability (DI), 187 (16%) had mixed GSI/DI, 245 (20.9%) had either voiding or storing dysfunction without concomitant incontinence, and 15 (1.3%) had normal urodynamic ¢ndings. The 41^50-and 51^60-year age groups had the highest prevalence rates of urinary incontinence, accounting for 31% and 28% of GSI cases, 35% and 25% of DI cases, and 40% and 27% of mixed GSI/DI cases, respectively. The prevalence of GSI and mixed GSI/DI increased consistently with age, but the prevalence of DI decreased after age 66. Thus, the prevalence rates of GSI, DI, and mixed GSI/DI were 56%, 5.8%, and 16%, respectively, in women with urinary symptoms. Background: Urinary incontinence is common in women. Because treatments differ, urge incontinence should be distinguished from stress incontinence. To make this distinction, current guidelines recommend an extensive evaluation that is too time-consuming for primary care practice. Objective: To test the accuracy of a simple questionnaire to categorize type of urinary incontinence in women. Design: Multicenter, prospective study of the accuracy of the 3 Incontinence Questions (3IQ) compared with an extended evaluation to distinguish between urge incontinence and stress incontinence. Setting: 5 academic medical centers in the United States. Participants: 301 women enrolled from April to December 2004 who were older than 40 years of age (mean age, 56 years [SD,) with untreated incontinence for an average of 7 years (SD, 7) and a broad range of incontinence severity.

Objectives-To estimate 2 year incidence, remission and predictors of urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) in a community based population of women ≥50. Methods-We analyzed 2004-2006 data in the Health and Retirement Study. Subjects were women ≥ 50 with baseline and follow-up UUI information. UUI incidence and remission were calculated. Predictors of UUI progression and improvement were estimated controlling for age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), parity, psychiatric illness, medical co-morbidities, functional limitations and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We evaluated whether baseline UUI status predicted follow-up status and used multivariable logistic regression to identify predictor variables. Results-8,581 women reported UUI status at baseline and follow-up. Of 7,244 women continent at baseline, 268 affirmed UUI at follow-up for a 2 year incidence of 3.7%. Of 581 women with UUI at baseline, 150 were continent at follow-up for a 2 year remission of 25.8%. Predictors of UUI development included increased age (7 th and 10 th decade compared to 6 th decade; OR 1.5 and 7.2, CI 1.1-2.1 and 4.2-12.5, respectively), obesity (OR 1.6, CI 1.2-2.1), history of psychiatric illness (OR 1.6, CI 1.3-2.0), functional limitations (OR 6.2, CI 4.2-9.2) and SUI (OR 5.0, CI 3.0-8.3). Women who denied UUI at baseline were also likely to deny UUI at follow-up (OR 47.4, CI 22.9-98.1). Conclusions-In this community based population of women ≥ 50 UUI incidence was low and remission was high. Predictors of UUI included increased age, severe obesity, functional limitations, a positive psychiatric history and incontinence status at baseline.

Introduction & Hypothesis-Urinary incontinence (UI) is common and the relationship between its subtypes is complex. Our objective was to describe the natural history and predictors of incontinence subtypes, Stress, Urgency and Mixed, in mid-aged and older U.S. women. We hypothesized that past UI subtype history predicted future UI subtype status and sought to determine the extent to which this occurred.

Objectives: To identify the proportion of OABs using OABs-q in adult females classified as SUI or UUI based on the results of the questionnaire for female urinary incontinence diagnosis (QUID). Material and Methods: 243 females of age group 18-55 years were screened for incontinence, of which 102 were included in the study. Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis and Overactive Bladder questionnaires were administered and the type of incontinence of the women was identified. Proportion of OAB was identified in SUI, UUI and MUI. Results: 102 out of 240 had incontinence, of which 41 women had SUI, 30 had UUI and 31 had MUI. Proportion of OAB was 17%, 60% and 87% respectively in SUI, UUI and MUI. Conclusion: Overactive bladder syndrome has a higher proportion amongst women showing mixed urinary incontinence.

The aim was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported symptom of urinary, faecal, and double incontinence (UI, FI, and DI) in men and women 75þ and to identify how other health complaints and Quality of Life (QoL) relate to incontinence symptoms. Methods: A randomised sample, strati¢ed for age, of eligible men and women from the population were included in the study and 4,277 out of 8,500 completed a postal questionnaire (61.6% women). The questions focused on di⁄culties in controlling urine and faeces, other health complaints, socio-economic background, and social relations. Results: Among all respondents 39% reported symptom of UI (more so among women P < 0.001), symptom of FI in 16.9% (ns between sexes), DI, i.e., a combination of UI and FI, was reported among 14.5% (ns between sexes). Incontinence increased with age, and persons reporting incontinence also had signi¢cantly more of all other health complaints compared with persons without incontinence. Those reporting DI comprised an especially vulnerable group. Health complaints associated with UI were communicative and mobility problems, other urinary complaints, dizziness, cough, and fatigue. FI was associated with diarrhoea, stomach pain, fatigue, and other pain. Risk factors for DI were diarrhoea, communication, and mobility problems. Conclusions: UI and FI were common among elderly men and women and increased with age. Furthermore, incontinence was associated with many other co-existing health complaints, and the most frail were those with DI.

Urinary incontinence is one of the priority health issue recognized by World Health Organisation. Urinary incontinence is defined as "a condition in which involuntary loss of urine is objectively demonstrable." The present hospital-based crosssectional study was conducted from November 2018 to January 2019. Total 322 women aged above 18 years were screened, who attended the hospital OPD of Homoeopathy University, Saipura, Sanganer, Jaipur. They were subjected to set of questionnaire related to urinary incontinence. Among the 322 participants the prevalence of urinary incontinence was 55.3% (95% confidence interval: 0.50-0.60%). The most common subtype was stress incontinence followed by mixed incontinence. The adjusted analysis revealed that women with middle age group (33-48 years) had more incidence of urinary incontinence (p value=0.000; χ2=60.802) and urinary incontinence showed an increasing trend with increasing parity with the p value = 0.002 (χ2=9.297).
