The Christology of St. Irenaeus
2025, Renato Bonasera
Abstract
As one second century Church Father, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, bemoaned, what was particularly troubling about the false doctrines being constructed by heretics such as the Gnostics of this time, was that they “often appealed to the same traditions and scriptural authorities but arrived at dramatically different theological conclusions.” In the New Testament writings, the rudimentary yet essential ideas about Jesus’ revelation and person were naturally already forming as early Christians pondered the Christ event and continued to respond to the question Jesus himself posed to his apostles: “Who do people say I am?” The answer to Jesus’ question was not always clear cut. Irenaeus’ contribution to ontological Christology (on the Person of Christ), soteriological Christology (on Christ’s salvific role) and his functional Christology (on the general work of Christ) related to his central salvific mission, is interesting given his chronological proximity to the New Testament writings. The outcome of this study will be a keener appreciation of the richness of Irenaeus’ study of the person and work of Christ and the nature of development in theology.
