PREPRINT: A Revised Timeline for the Birth of Jesus: August 1 BCE

Abstract

This paper proposes Jesus’ birth in August 1 BCE, challenging the 4 BCE consensus for Herod the Great’s death through a reexamination of biblical, astronomical, and historical evidence. Luke 2:1–20 and Matthew 2:1–16 anchor the timeline, with Zechariah’s priestly course (Luke 1:5) and the 3–2 BCE Jupiter-Regulus conjunctions (Molnar 1999, 43–65) pinpointing the birth. The paper disputes Josephus’ eclipse (Antiquities XVII.6.4) as March 13, 4 BCE, favoring December 29, 1 BCE, and reinterprets the “treat to the multitude” (Antiquities XVII.9.3) as a funeral gathering or Purim, not Passover. It proposes Herod’s reign began in 37 BCE (Vidal 2025), ending in 1 CE, supported by numismatic evidence (Meshorer 1982; Hendin 2010) and Megillat Taanit (Noam 2003), reframing Archelaus’ and Philip’s reigns and establishing a coherent historical-theological framework.
