Abstract

This article explores social sustainability, emphasizing the well-being, equity, and resilience of communities within development frameworks. It examines key components such as inclusivity, social equity, community resilience, and cultural preservation, and their integration in urban and rural planning. The paper reviews literature, case studies, and data to highlight challenges in achieving socially sustainable communities, focusing on metrics, policy design, and implementation. It discusses the role of social capital, participatory governance, and public policies in fostering community cohesion. Findings show that successful social sustainability approaches require community engagement, transparent governance, equitable resource distribution, and adaptation to local cultures. Global case studies demonstrate that social sustainability can enhance resilience, reduce inequalities, and improve quality of life. However, the absence of standardized measurement frameworks remains a challenge, underscoring the need for adaptable metrics. The paper advocates for a cohesive framework that integrates social sustainability with environmental and economic goals for a holistic sustainable development approach.
