Abstract This document provides advice to the designers of digital communication equipment, link layer protocols and packet switched subnetworks (collectively referred to as subnetworks) who wish to support the Internet protocols but who may be unfamiliar with Internet architecture and the implications of their design choices on the performance and efficiency of the Internet.

A few years ago, researchers started new projects by requesting bibliographic searches, contacting fellow researchers, and leafing through conference proceedings and university technical report lists. Today, the Internet can serve all these functions and serve them well, but trying to locate data in this sea of information can be a considerable task. Resource discovery services now help users locate and retrieve information. These services contain tools for browsing, searching, and organizing information distributed throughout the Internet. Browsing tools let users navigate the information space to find the specific data they need. Indexing search tools automatically locate relevant data on the basis of user interest. Independent of the approach used, resource discovery services can also help users organize newfound information so that they can refer to it without having to repeat the entire discovery process. We present an overview of the resource discovery services currently available on the Internet. Because resource discovery has been the subject of intense research, this article is not meant to be exhaustive. Towards an Information-Centric Internet with more Things draft-kutscher-icn-iwmt-00 The Internet is already made of things. However, we expect there to be many more less-capable things, such as sensors and actuators, connected to the Internet in years to come. In parallel, Internet applications are more and more being used to perform operations on named (information) objects, and various Information-Centric Networking (ICN) approaches are being researched in order to allow such applications to work effectively at scale and with various forms of mobility and in networking environments that are more challenging than a traditional access network and data center. In this position paper, we outline some benefits that may accrue, and issues that arise, should the Internet, with many more things, make use of the ICN approach to networking and we argue that ICN concepts should be considered when planning for increases in the number of things connected to the Internet.
