Femtocell deployments allow for high precision in localizing mobile devices. Many of today's location based services have long been mapping the placements of wireless base stations and using the obtained maps to localize mobile devices. Allowing unauthorized third parties to obtain the locations of femtocell base stations may not be desired by network operators. Localizing mobile devices using the information about femtocell base stations' locations is a service that an investor in a femtocell deployment may want to exploit exclusively. In this work we present a station identity management system that enables preserving femtocell base stations location privacy. Through the use of dynamic base station identifiers, the system ensures that unauthorized third parties are not able to map the locations of the base stations for use in their localization services. We analyze the design tradeoffs of the presented approach for different femtocell technologies. Results indicate that complexity will be limited, and that the presented system creates network dynamics smaller than the existing dynamics due to mobility. Additionally, we present an approach for providing location information to authorized systems at different resolution levels.

Location-Sharing-Based Services (LSBS) complement Location-Based Services by using locations from a group of users, and not just individuals, to provide some contextualized service based on the locations in the group. However, there are growing concerns about the misuse of location data by third-parties, which fuels the need for more privacy controls in such services. We address the relevant problem of privacy in LSBSs by providing practical and effective solutions to the privacy problem in one such service, namely the fair rendez-vous point (FRVP) determination service. The privacy preserving FRVP (PPFRVP) problem is general enough and nicely captures the computations and privacy requirements in LSBSs. In this paper, we propose two privacy-preserving algorithms for the FRVP problem and analytically evaluate their privacy in both passive and active adversarial scenarios. We study the practical feasibility and performance of the proposed approaches by implementing them on Nokia mobile devices. By means of a targeted user-study, we attempt to gain further understanding of the popularity, the privacy and acceptance of the proposed solutions.

With the advance of location technologies, people can now determine their location in various ways, for instance, with GPS or based on nearby cellphone towers. These technologies have led to the introduction of location-based services, which allow people to get information relevant to their current location. Location privacy is of utmost concern for such location-based services, since knowing a person’s location can reveal information about her activities or her interests. In this thesis, we first focus on location-based services that need to know only a person’s location, but not her identity. We propose a solution using location cloaking based on k-anonymity, which requires neither a single trusted location broker, which is a central server that knows everybody’s location, nor trust in all users of the system and that integrates nicely with existing infrastructures. Abstract Cellular networking standards organizations such as the 3 rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are currently developing System Architecture Evolution (SAE) as their core network architecture. SAE is all-IP based. However, IP-based networks face several known issues, such as mobility, multi-homing, location privacy, path preference, etc. Mobile IP (MIP) and its variants, such as Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), Hierarchical MIP, and Proxy MIP, have been developed primarily to alleviate the mobility problem.

Location privacy is one of the major security problems in a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). By eavesdropping on the transmitted packets, an attacker can keep track of the place and time of the communication between the mobile devices. The hardware address of the device can often be linked to the identity of the user operating the mobile device; this represents a violation of the user's privacy. Fortunately, this problem can be solved quite efficiently in a WPAN. We consider four communication scenarios and present several techniques to solve the location privacy problem in each of these scenarios. As mobile devices in a WPAN are typically operated by a user and energy constrained, we focused on user-friendliness and energy consumption during the design of our solutions.

Location privacy is one of the major security problems in a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). The use of temporary pseudonyms has been suggested by several authors to solve the problem. In this paper, we construct a formal model of location privacy for WPAN. This theoretical framework contains a formal definition of location privacy and models the access of an adversary to the communication channels from a set of oracles. This theoretical model can be used to analyze and evaluate location privacy-enhancing pseudonym schemes proposed in the literature. 3

With the rapid advancement of positioning and tracking capabilities (mobile phones, on-board navigation systems) location based services are rapidly increasing. Privacy in location based systems is addressed in many papers. Our work is focused on the trusted third party privacy framework that utilizes the concept of k-anonymity with or without l-diversity. In previous anonymization models k may be defined as a personalization parameter of the mobile user or as uniform system parameter for all mobile users . Clearly, k other users may not be available at the time of request in these systems. These requests are discarded because the quality of service (QoS) they require cannot be satisfied. In this paper we introduce a novel suite of algorithms called MobiPriv that guarantees a 100% success rate of processing a mobile request using k-anonymity with diversity considerations. We evaluated our suite of algorithms experimentally against previously proposed anonymization algorithms using real world traffic volume data, real world road network and mobile users generated realistically by a mobile object generator.

Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks are particularly vulnerable due to their fundamental characteristics such as an open medium, dynamic topology, distributed cooperation, and constrained capability. Location information of nodes can be critical in wireless ad hoc networks, especially in those deployed for military purposes. In this paper, we present study of various method of receiver location privacy in mobile adhoc network.
