The swirling motion of fluids that occurs irregularly in space and time is called turbulence. However, this randomness, apparent from a casual observation, is not without some order. Turbulent flows are as abundant in nature as life itself, and are pervasive in technology. They are a paradigm for spatially extended nonlinear dissipative systems in which many length scales are excited simultaneously and coupled strongly. The phenomenon has been studied extensively in engineering and in diverse fields such as astrophysics, oceanography, and meteorology. The Onset of Turbulence in Pipe Flow

Shear flows undergo a sudden transition from laminar to turbulent motion as the velocity increases, and the onset of turbulence radically changes transport efficiency and mixing properties. Even for the well-studied case of pipe flow, it has not been possible to determine at what Reynolds number the motion will be either persistently turbulent or ultimately laminar. We show that in pipes, turbulence that is transient at low Reynolds numbers becomes sustained at a distinct critical point. Through extensive experiments and computer simulations, we were able to identify and characterize the processes ultimately responsible for sustaining turbulence. In contrast to the classical Landau-Ruelle-Takens view that turbulence arises from an increase in the temporal complexity of fluid motion, here, spatial proliferation of chaotic domains is the decisive process and intrinsic to the nature of fluid turbulence.

The Mathematical Theory Of Turbulence Or Chaos

The motion of fluids which are incompressible could be described by the Navier-Stokes differential equations. However, the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for modelling turbulence misbehave very badly although they are relatively simple-looking. The solutions could wind up being extremely unstable even with nice, smooth, reasonably harmless initial conditions. A mathematical understanding of the outrageous behaviour of these equations would greatly affect the field of fluid mechanics. In this paper, which had been published in an international journal in 2010, a reasoned, practical approach towards resolving the issue is adopted and a practical, statistical kind of mathematical solution is proposed.

Transition to turbulence in open flows: what linear and fully nonlinear local and global theories tell us

Mixing layers, jets, wakes, boundary layers over wings or rotating disks, Poiseuille and Couette flows are examples of open shear flows encountered in many industrial or geophysical situations. These flows develop spatially under the combined action of advection and instabilities and eventually undergo a transition to turbulence. In the eighties, the linear concepts of absolute and convective instability succeeded in predicting some aspects of open shear flow dynamics, but a description of their spatio-temporal development including nonlinear effects and secondary instabilities was lacking and even the very fact that a linear criterion describes so well strongly nonlinear flows remains mysterious. The present work reports on very recent progress elucidating open shear flow dynamics. A fully nonlinear extension of the concepts of absolute and convective instability introduced by Chomaz (Phys. Rev. Lett. 69 (1992) 1931) is recalled in connection with the broader problem of front and pattern selection. These new ideas are first illustrated on simple amplitude equations. Then the fully nonlinear concepts are applied to actual flows such as wakes and mixing layers. Furthermore, new scenarii involving secondary absolute instability are proposed and compared to the dynamics of the rotating disk and mixing layers experiment.

Low dimensional models of the transition to turbulence

The transition from a regularly ordered state of fluid motion to chaotic and turbulent regime has been long observed and progressively understood through the discovery and application of theoretical tools and frameworks. One such lens through which the problem can be attacked confines the dynamics of a turbulent system to a set of ordinary differential equations describing the time evolution of velocity modes, allowing for the application of techniques from dynamical systems theory. In this body of work,this framework shall be applied to develop a series of low dimensional models of the transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow (fluid sheared between two parallel plates of anti-parallel velocity). These models will then be investigated to understand certain features of the transition. Reynolds' paper sought to explain the change in character of flow through a pipe from laminar to turbulent that his earlier experiments had shown to occur when the dimensionless group that today bears his name exceeded approximately 2000. This he did by decomposing the velocity into mean and fluctuating components and noting how the average kinetic energy generation and dissipation rates changed with Reynolds number. The paper was only grudgingly accepted by two very distinguished referees and initially raised little external interest. As years went by, however, the averaged form of the equations of motion, known as the Reynolds equations (which were an intermediate stage in Reynolds' analysis) became the acknowledged starting point for computing turbulent flows. Papers and abstracts of the international conference Advances in Turbulence VIII

The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya at the Vilanova i la Geltru Campus (EPSViG) organizes the VIII ADVANCES IN TURBULENCE International conference as the main periodic event of the Xarxa Tematica de Dinamica de Fluids i Turbulencia Geofisica during 24-26 November 2005. This series of conferences started in 1992 with a small meeting of 50 participants held at UPC Barcelona which grew steadily. Advances in Turbulence 4, held in Barcelona in October 1998 had 117 participants from 18 countries and was strongly suported by CNRS, Advances in Turbulence 5 was held at the Universitat de Girona in June 1999 with more than 100 participants, Advances in Turbulence 6 was presented within the wider scope EUROMECH European Turbulence Conference with more than 500 Participants at the Vertex Auditorium in Barcelona, and Advances in Turbulence 7 was held during 21-23 November 2003 in Vilanova i la Geltru with 100 participants. The conference site is a human sized coastal village with many attractive lures to the visitor including food, sights and leisure. The Advances in Turbulence 8 conference will take place hosted by the Campus Universitari de la Mediterrania and the UPC at the Moli de Mar building, near the lighthouse beach. We welcome all participants to discuss and present their latest work on turbulent flows, mixing, chaotic dynamics and complex systems. The Proceedings Special Issue will be published in English (although presentations and abstracts may be given both in English and French). The full paper if accepted and presented at the conference will be reviewed in either Word or Tex Kluwer templates. All handling of the papers will be electronic and published likely as an special issue after the conference with the participant list. From pre-turbulent flows to fully developed turbulence

In colloquial speech the term "turbulence" means any flow with complicated temporal and spatial dynamics. In contrast, the properties of these flows are supposed to be described by models which are based on the assumption of a precise and very well defined setting. This paper is an attempt to review the fundamentals of turbulence theory, with emphasis on non-fully developed turbulence.

This is in no way intended as a review of turbulence-the subject is far too big for adequate treatment within a reasonably finite number of pages; the monumental ' closure ' scheme brings no guarantee of better predictions outside the range of geometries and parameters previously documented, then it is of little value to the user. Sometimes a user may suffer from the delusion that a more ' advanced ' closure scheme must, merely by virtue of its complexity, provide a better representation of the effects
