Policies are increasingly used to manage large-scale distributed system. They usually adopt ECA rules that can 't express system i state transitions, enable policy servers to perform jlexible actions or cooperate eflciently. In this paper; a logic-based policy definition language LPDL is proposed. We define LPDL'S syntax, execution model and its semantic that provides a formal framework for policy-based network management. LPDL is proved to have Petri Net i expressive power and Turing Machine b computing power. Administrator can use LPDL to describe system b analysis and decision functions or encapsulate them into physical codes jlexibly based on actual need. Finally, a Cooperative Network Management Framework ( C N W ) , its protoqpe and application are presented to show that LPDL can meet the requirements of network management j. dynamic growth.

Policies are increasingly being used to manage complex communication networks. In this paper we present our work on a "policy server" which is being used to provide centralized administration of packet voice gateways and "soft switches" in next generation circuit and packet telephony networks. The policies running in the policy server are specified using a domain independent policy description language (PDL). This paper is motivated by the problem of evaluating policies specified in PDL. We present an algorithm for evaluating policies and study both its theoretical and empirical behavior. We show that the problem of evaluating policies is quite intractable. However we note that the hard instances of the policy evaluation problem are quite rare in real world networks. Under some very realistic assumptions we are able to show that our policy evaluation algorithm is quite efficient and is well suited for enforcing policies in complex networks. These results constitute the first attempt to develop a formal framework to study the informal concepts of policy based network management.

The possibility of dynamically managing Quality of Service (QoS) in heterogeneous networks represents a key element for telecom operators which aim at making their communication infrastructures able to support new emerging multimedia services. The large success of triple play services together with the ongoing migration of voice carriers towards the NGN (Next Generation Network) architecture imposes a new way of controlling and utilizing network resources in order to fulfill user's requirements. The use of network level policies to configure and manage QoS-based communication networks allows network operators to automatically adapt the managed systems to changing requirements of the new operational and business scenarios. In this paper we present an innovative approach to policy-based network management which ensures flexibility and effectiveness to all processes composing the service life cycle, from negotiation to delivery. In order to allow users and applications to modify their QoS requirements, thus triggering the SLA re-negotiation, at the same time optimizing the configuration of network elements we implemented a novel framework capable to automatically translate user's requirements into network policies. Such framework relies on the adoption of ontologies as means to describe heterogeneous realms such as those associated with the fruition and delivery of innovative services. Ontologies are used to represent user's needs and preferences, which feed the policy creation and enforcement process. Different real world scenarios are depicted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In network management systems, a view represents a subset of the management domain tailored to a specific activity or management role. The support for views is extremely relevant in large-scale management systems where it becomes infeasible to centralize all the management information. The paper proposes a model that recognizes the importance and provides support for the coexistence of different management views of a large set of entities.

This article has as objective to propose the extension of the use of the management based on network policies. To do so, it has been created an approach to the distribution of management policies with emphasis on the quality of service. This approach communicates the managed device to the point of decision, requiring corrective actions for the devices, reporting changes in the configuration, registering the managed resources and applying the policies defined for the network management. In this context, the message is defined in XML format, having HTTP as its policies distributor among the participants of the distributed system. As a contribution, this article has allowed more flexibility in the distribution of policies for the devices and the sharing of a logical group of policies to the management of resources and applications emphasized in quality of service. Policy-based management (PBM) is being used as technological solution on the managing and controlling complex networks and systems. One of the most important issues involved in the life-cycle of PBM is the policies creation because the future decisions made by the management system depend on this, and therefore, the network behavior. In this paper we present a novel model for creating management policies in telecommunications networks. We propose a model which includes a Policy Creation Process, Actors, Policy Abstraction Levels and a Procedure for Creating Policies. An implementation of the proposed model over the Technology Division at University of Cauca is included.

Policies can be used for the configuration and management of existing services, possibly at runtime, without having to change their implementation. They declaratively specify the behavior of these services in certain circumstances and can be used in areas like security or quality of service. In order to make the policy specification as effective as possible, specific policy languages have been defined for many different areas. We present a policy ontology where specific policy languages are created as simple extensions of a generic policy model. In addition, by explicitly representing (and mapping) the domain the policies are applied to, domain concepts can be used directly inside policies. As a result, policies can be more targeted towards different areas and domains.
