Abstract

Internal migration has a strong impact on population redistribution, and plays a significant role in social cohesion. In Italy, the foreign population is a mosaic made up of minorities with different demographic characteristics. The aim of this study is to unveil, by means of a gravity model and using data from the Italian population register from 2014 to 2017, significant differences between national and foreign citizens’ inter‐provincial migration patterns. Some migrants, such as the Ukrainian citizens, follow a process of spatial assimilation while others, as in the case of Chinese citizens, respond to the call of migration networks. The role played by the distance of the inter‐provincial migration in making these moves is also different, and varies from citizenship to citizenship: Indians and Albanians are more willing to travel longer distances; conversely, Romanians and Ukrainians frequently opt for shorter moves.

The regional dynamics of internal migration intensities in Italy

This paper considers internal migration in Italy in terms of current patterns and longer term trends in migration intensity. It systematically reviews the Italian situation by considering internal migration patterns by citizenship and gender using a geography of 611 local labour market areas (LLMAs), distinguishing between short-and longdistance moves. Attention is given, in particular, to how migration intensities have changed between the categories of LLMAs and across different demographic subgroups. The paper also provides descriptive analyses of the influence on migration patterns of the persistent socioeconomic disparities, which exist between LLMAs. Finally, it discusses the role of delayed youth transitions from home, showing how this phenomenon-also observed in other countries-manifests itself in the Italian national and regional contexts.

Dynamic Historical Analysis of Migration in Italy

In recent decades Italy has been affected significantly by multiple, complex and varied migratory flows as a consequence of demographic and socio-economic changes in Italian society. The processes, driven by the country’s social conditions, have more or less over 20 years seen Italy change from a country of emigration into a destination country characterised by significant inflows. As a result of the economic crisis, recent years appear to show a resurgence of emigration, with numbers and conditions differing from the past. Immigration continues to be an integral part of the country’s social and demographic structure; indeed, it is the predominant factor in population growth today. The determinants of the recent interregional migration flows in Italy: A panel data analysis

This study investigates the determinants of interregional migration flows in Italy in the light of the upsurge occurred in 1996, after two decades of decreasing internal migration rates. The fixed-effect vector decomposition estimator (FEVD) is applied to a gravity model using bilateral migration flows for the period 1996-2005. It is shown that the FEVD improves the estimates with respect to the traditional panel data estimators. The GDP per capita and the unemployment rate appear to be the key determinants whose changes push migrants out from their regions and direct them to "better off" destinations. Migrants leaving the regions in the Center-North respond differently to the push and pull forces compared to southern migrants. The dynamic model provides evidence for the presence of social networks, which in this analysis take place for each pair of regions.

The impact of immigration on the internal mobility of natives and foreign-born residents: evidence from Italy

In this paper we investigate the relationship between immigration flows and internal mobility in Italy during the period 2003-2011. Using semiparametric negative binomial gravity models with smooth spatio-temporal trends, and dealing with endogeneity issues through a control function approach, we provide evidence of a significant negative (or displacement) effect of new foreign immigrants on the internal mobility of foreign-born residents and of Italian citizens with a low education level, as well as a significant positive (or complementarity) effect of new foreign immigrants on the internal mobility of Italian citizens with a high education level.

Population Change and International and Internal Migration in Italy, 2002-2017: Ravenstein Revisited

In 1885, Ravenstein formulated his “laws” of migration, based on the experience of the British Isles. In a further 1889 paper, he extended his analysis as a tour d’horizon of migration and population changes in other nations, including Italy. Even if social and economic processes including globalisation and rising mobility have changed the world since then, Ravenstein’s “laws” remain a point of reference today. Harnessing theoretical and methodological advances made since the 19th century, this paper describes and seeks to explain the role of international and internal migration in regional population change in Italy from 2002-2017. Some Stylized Facts on Italian Inter-regional Migration

In this chapter we provide a descriptive analysis of inter-regional mobility in Italy for the period between 1992 and 2005. We use ISTAT data on the change of residence for groups of individuals according to age and education. We find evidence of two different types of migration. The first is the migration of working age individuals who respond to changes in economic conditions. The second is the return migration, which involves older cohorts of individuals, it is mainly driven by factors non-economic in nature and it is roughly constant over time. We also find that migration intensity generally increases over the period, but only for the first type of migration, while return migration, after a phase of stability, decreases in 2004 and 2005. Overall, the use of disaggregated data by age and education appears crucial for the correct identification of the determinants of migration.

Determinants of different internal migration trends: the Italian experience

This paper investigates the determinants of interregional migration in Italy for the period 1985-2006, during which different migration trends took place. In so doing, in addition to the traditional variables of Harris and Todaro model, the impact of housing prices and externalities variables were studied. Our results, using a dynamic panel GMM, show that the H-T model, due to the complexity of the internal migration process, omits some important economic and non-economic variables and may not be representative of migration flow in Italy. Furthermore, our analysis confirms our intuition that for different periods we have to take into account different determinants.

The location of immigrants in Italy: Disentangling networks and local effects

________________________________________ This paper analyses the location choice of immigrants living in Italy in [2002][2003][2004][2005][2006][2007] and aims at separating the so called "network effect" from other locality-specific characteristics. The network effect is identified by the number of previous arrivals in the same location, whereas other local, geographically-specific characteristicssuch as the local labour-market conditions or the presence of higher-quality amenitiesare assumed to be time invariant. Our econometric estimation takes into account the spatial correlation in our data. The results show that, if local characteristics are the main factor explaining the spatial repartition of immigrants in Italy, network effects also have a sizable effect, particularly in the largest cities of Northern Italy.

Italian immigration: the origins, nature and evolution of Italy’s migratory systems

This article reconstructs the historical development of foreign settlement in Italy. It shows how Italy is part of a number of different migratory patterns, some of which are interconnected, while others are quite strongly differentiated. This diversity means that the standard images that link Italian immigration with a high degree of social marginalization do not correspond to the more complex realities, and by focusing on short-term aspects simply conflate highly differentiated patterns of migration into one single type. The article begins by reconstructing the patterns of foreign settlement in Italy since the time of Unification and then goes on to analyze the mechanisms of contemporary migrant flows to demonstrate how these derive from very different sets of motives and expectations. The motivations also explain why different immigrant groups respond to the different forms of regulation adopted by the Italian state. The article concludes by reviewing the data presently available on the numbers of foreigners currently in Italy, which indicate that over the last twenty years those numbers have decreased.

  1. We rely on citizenship to identify the foreign groups: this approach classifies as Italian all those who have acquired Italian citizenship before they move. The information on the people that have acquired Italian citizenship is not avail- able, being an exception at the census date-there were 670,000 naturalized persons on 9th October, 2011. According to recent estimates, this figure had become around 1.34 million at the end of 2017 (ISTAT, 2019). Their weight varies significantly among the groups considered.
  2. We reduced the five major socio-economic regions (NUTS 1) to three by aggregating North-East with North-West namely 'North' and South with the Islands as 'South'. This resulted in three macro geographical areas North, Centre, and South.
  3. We also applied a unique model by using a factor variable to take into account the flows of each citizenship, but in this way, we could not consider the significance of variables. We presented the most interesting results of every model by the significance of the variables. Furthermore, for each citizenship we considered the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and the residual deviance of each model, which measured the goodness of model.
  4. The rate of interprovincial migration is calculated as the ratio of the annual average of movement among the provinces ob- served in the period 2014-2017 and the population on 1st January, 2016, which is considered to be an average population.

Internal migration in Italy increased in the 2000s due to foreigners residing in the country. Foreigners have changed the characteristics of Italy’s internal migration. Extended gravity models were run to highlight the differences between the migratory behaviours of Italians and foreigners. The model was implemented to detect the different effects of the Italian and foreign populations, and the distances between the provinces of origin and destinations of the inter-provincial migration of Italians and foreigners. Estimations obtained for the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 highlight the different evolutions of the phenomenon.

Minorities internal migration in Italy: an analysis based on gravity models

Italians and foreigners internal migration assume different behaviour in terms of intensity, geography, type. The levels of the mobility, the propensity to move in a short or in a long range, the propensity to cluster or to disseminate in the host country represent important differential characteristics between the two populations. Actually the foreign population seems as a mosaic made up of minorities showing different propensities. This is the reason why an analysis considering foreign population as a whole could reach biased outpcomes. In the paper some gravity models applied to migratory movements among the 110 Italian provinces concerning the most consistent minorities groups are used. Internal Migration Patterns of National and Foreign Population in Italy. A Local Spatial Comparative Approach

A local spatial comparative approach to study internal migration of national and foreign population in Italy is proposed in the paper. Univariate and bivariate local analysis of spatial autocorrelation of internal migration rates of the two populations is conducted. Results are mapped and crossed with municipalities typologies identified by the Degree of Urbanization (Degurba) classification. The local scale of analysis allows to appreciate specific patterns of internal migrations normally ignored. Specifically, a dual spatial regime emerges between geographical patterns of internal migration of nationals and foreigners in terms of urban-rural divide and level of spatial polarization.

Exploring migration networks in Italy: empirical evidence from field surveys

Framework and objectives The relationship between demographic phenomena, cultural identity and multiethnic society construction, in a period of migration flows really dynamic and in continuous growth, is a very important theme to thinking about. In this context, the concept of "migration system" could be essential to describe the present situation. It can be said that "calls for a systems approach tend to follow from a recognition that to capture the changing trends and patterns of contemporary international migration requires a dynamic perspective. Italians’ and Foreigners’ Internal Mobility in Italy

Internal mobility in Italy, after periods of intense growth and stagnation with different directions and actors involved, showed a marked increase also thanks to the contribution of the foreigners residing in Italy. In the last years, in fact, international immigration seems to have affected greatly the nature and features of internal mobility. Between 1995 and 2010, the changes of residence between Italian municipalities increased of more than 20%. Simultaneously, the contribution of the foreign population to internal migrations reached the level of 17%. The increase of the number of foreign residents, their greater propensity to move within the country, and structural factors such as the greater incidence of foreigners within the younger age-groups, may only partly explain these changes.     Exploring the Settlement Models of the Main Foreign Communities Residing in Italy (2003–2021)

    In the last few decades, the foreign resident population in Italy has grown considerably, showing a tendency towards a stable settlement. The spatial distribution of this population is an important key to better understanding the integration process in the host society. This paper aims to explore the diachronic evolution of the settlement models of the foreign population and the main ethnic groups usually classified as residents in Italy in the period 2003–2021. Towards this aim, we computed statistical global indices referring to evenness, concentration, and clustering dimension of residential segregation and ad hoc indices that regard territorial dimensions.
