Analysis and Optimization (IJNAO). This journal is published biannually and supported by the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences at the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Faculty of Mathematical Sciences with three centers of excellence and three research centers is well-known in mathematical communities in Iran. The main aim of the journal is to facilitate discussions and collaborations between specialists in applied mathematics, especially in the fields of numerical analysis and optimization, in the region and worldwide. Our vision is that scholars from different applied mathematical research disciplines, pool their insight, knowledge and efforts by communicating via this international journal. In order to assure high quality of the journal, each article will be reviewed by subject-qualified referees. Our expectations for IJNAO are as high as any well-known applied mathematical journal in the world. We trust that by publishing quality research and creative work, the possibility of more collaborations between researchers would be provided. We invite all applied mathematicians especially in the fields of numerical analysis and optimization to join us by submitting their original work to the Iranian Journal of Numerical Analysis and Optimization.

In 2010, the Deputy Petroleum Minister in Research and Technology of I.R. IRAN has launched a new program aimed at reintegrating of university research potentials (also private research sector) and rebuilding universityindustry research network which is the first step of the strategic innovation, research and technology executive constitution of Iranian petroleum ministry. It involves the establishment of Scientific Centers of Excellence (SCOEs) in major universities, which is a part of general research, technology and innovation plan in petroleum ministry. This program has had a major impact on the universities in order to become qualified and fulfill the R&D projects requirements in oil and gas industry in Iran. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine faculty members’ views about the assessment of world-class university components in Iran’s comprehensive universities. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a descriptive methodology by using a survey method. The statistical population consisted of 8,548 faculty members of comprehensive universities all over Iran. Considering the large size of the population, the comprehensive universities were categorized into five clusters (North, South, East, West and Center). The authors selected the faculty members from different clusters using Cochran’s formula. A total of 367 faculty members were selected from five clusters. For data gathering, a researcher-designed questionnaire was used. In data analysis, statistical procedures including the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Kolmogrov-Smirnov test, one-sample t-test, and Friedman test were performed. Findings The findings of the research showed that except for academic freedom, other components of world-class university in Iran’s comprehensive universities were lower than the mean. Practical implications The case study showed how Iran’s comprehensive universities can become world-class universities. The methods of this case study can also be used in other fields. Originality/value This study adds to the knowledge of a world-class universities. Therefore to reach a desired level in comprehensive universities’ preparation for converting to a world-class university, it is essential that the policy makers and organizers of Iran’s higher education system pay greater attention to items such as research motivation, research innovation, research budget increase, authority reduction on various university departments, internet bandwidth increase and laboratory facilities increase.

Using indicators and statistics of ISI, this paper comparatively evaluates Iran indexed scientific productions from 1993 through 2007. Considering the number of indexed scientific productions in WOS, Iran was in a satisfactory position in terms of the growth rate. According to the statistics of ESI, Iran was in the second place after Turkey among Islamic countries and the fortieth in the world, during the last ten years. Most of the scientific productions of Iran were published in English "article" formats. According to JCR statistics, three Iranian Journals in 2005 were indexed in SCI section of this database and three more journals were added to it in 2006. Shiraz University has had the most journals in JCR in 2006.
