Computational Sciences (CS) are challenging in many aspects, not only from the scientific domain they address, but especially also from the needs of the most sophisticated IT infrastructures to perform their research. Often, the latest and most powerful supercomputers, high-performance networks and high-capacity data storages are utilized for CS, while being offered, developed and operated by experts outside CS. This standard service approach has certainly been useful for many domains, but more and more often it represents a limitation to the needs of CS and the restrictions of the IT services. The partnership initiative CS established at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) moves the collaboration between Computational Scientists and IT service providers to a new level, moving from a service-centered approach to an integrated partnership. The interface between them is a gateway to an improved collaboration between equal partners, such that future IT services address the requirements of CS in a better, optimized, and more efficient way. In addition, it sheds some light on future professional development.

During last years the e-Infrastructure concept has been extensively elaborated and promoted as an essential pillar for the implementation of ERA (European Research Area). The main components of this infrastructure are the network for education and research and the Grid infrastructures. At the European level important efforts and resourced have been devoted to the development of both components, with joint financial support provided by Framework Programmes 6 and 7 of EU and national research programmes. At the national level, the high-speed communication network for education and research, and national grid infrastructure for research are included in the list of priority investment projects in the Information and Communications Technologies domain. The main financial support for the development of these projects is provided by the Sectorial Operational Programme "Increase of Economic Competitiveness". ICI Bucharest is among beneficiary organizations of this support. This paper presents the European context for e-Infrastructure development as support for e-Science concept implementation, the evolution and current status of Grid infrastructures at the European and national levels, a short review of the development of Grid computing at ICI Bucharest, the main objectives and activities of the structural funds grant awarded to the institute for a significant upgrade of the current grid site RO-01-ICI.

Over the period September 2002-April 2003 the UK Grid Engineering Task Force and staff at Regional eScience Centres and CCLRC deployed the Globus Toolkit GT2 at 14 sites and on approximately 80 compute resources to set up the first production-quality e-Science Grid for the UK. This work is proving to be exemplary of what can be achieved using heterogeneous resources on a national scale and is feeding discussions on how to link Grids with multiple virtual organisations across Europe. This paper therefore reports on experiences of this deployment exercise, compares with other efforts worldwide and suggests further work to be done.

The evolution of the global scientific cyberinfrastructure (CI) has, over the last 10+ years, led to a large diversity of CI instances. While specialized, competing and alternative CI building blocks are inherent to a healthy ecosystem, it also becomes apparent that the increasing degree of fragmentation is hindering interoperation, and thus limiting collaboration, which is essential for modern science communities often spanning international groups and multiple disciplines (but even 'small sciences', with smaller and localized communities, are often embedded into the larger scientific ecosystem, and are increasingly dependent on the availability of CI.) There are different reasons why fragmentation occurs, on technical and social level. But also, it is apparent that the current funding model for creating CI components largely fails to aid the transition from research to production, by mixing CS research and IT engineering challenges into the same funding strategies. The 10 th anniversary of the EU funded project 'Grid Lab' (which was an early and ambitious attempt on providing a consolidated and science oriented cyberinfrastructure software stack to a specific science community) was taken as an opportunity to invite international leaders and early stage researchers in grid computing and e-Science from Europe, America and Asia, and, together with representatives of the EU and US funding agencies, to discuss the fundamental aspects of CI evolution, and to contemplate the options for a more coherent, more coordinated approach to the global evolution of CI.
