On 'Machine Consciousness

Consciousness in higher animals, by virtue of its 100 millisecond time constant, is a necessarily greatly simplified and stripped-down version of more complex multiple tunable workspace cognition/regulation dyads like wound healing, immune function, gene expression, institutional function and the like. These more complex dynamic entities emerged through evolutionary exaptation of the inevitable information crosstalk between coresident cognitive modules. In consequence of the debrided nature of consciousness, it should not be difficult to construct a fast, single workspace `conscious machine' that mimics the human tunable neuronal global workspace system. Tied to a 'backbrain' AI that has learned hyperrapid stereotypic pattern responses to some particular set of likely challenges, the result is an elementary 'emotional' conscious machine. Assessing artificial consciousness: A collective review article

While the recent special issue of JCS on machine consciousness (Volume 14, Issue 7) was in preparation, a collection of papers on the same topic, entitled Artificial Consciousness and edited by Antonio Chella and Riccardo Manzotti, was published. The editors of the JCS special issue, Ron Chrisley, Robert Clowes and Steve Torrance, thought it would be a timely and productive move to have authors of papers in their collection review the papers in the Chella and Manzotti book, and include these reviews in the special issue of the journal. Eight of the JCS authors (plus Uziel Awret) volunteered to review one or more of the fifteen papers in Artificial Consciousness; these individual reviews were then collected together with a minimal amount of editing to produce a seamless chapter-by-chapter review of the entire book. Because the number and length of contributions to the JCS issue was greater than expected, the collective review of Artificial Consciousness had to be omitted, but here at...

Progress in Research on Implementing Machine Consciousness

Thus far, we have experienced three artificial intelligence (AI) booms. In the third one, we succeeded in developing AI that partially surpassed human capabilities. However, we are yet to develop AI that, like humans, can perform a series of cognitive processes. Consciousness built into devices is called machine consciousness. Related research has been conducted from two perspectives: studying machine consciousness as a tool to elucidate human consciousness and achieving the technological goal of furthering AI research with conscious AI. Herein, we survey the research conducted on machine consciousness from the second perspective. For AI to attain machine consciousness, its implementation must be evaluated. Therefore, we only surveyed attempts to implement consciousness as systems on devices. We collected research results in chronological order and found no breakthroughs that could deliver machine consciousness soon. Moreover, there is no method to evaluate whether an implemented machine consciousness system possesses consciousness, thus making it difficult to confirm the certainty of the implementation. This field of research is a new frontier. It is an exciting field with many discoveries expected in the future.

This paper is a review of the work that has been carried out on machine consciousness. A clear overview of this diverse field is achieved by breaking machine consciousness down into four different areas, which are used to understand its aims, discuss its relationship with other subjects and outline the work that has been carried out so far. The criticisms that have been made against machine consciousness are also covered, along with its potential benefits, and the work that has been done on analysing systems for signs of consciousness. Some of the social and ethical issues raised by machine consciousness are examined at the end of the paper.

We argue that the functions of consciousness are implemented in a bio-computational manner. That is to say, the conscious as well as the non-conscious aspects of human thinking, planning, and perception are produced by adaptive, biological algorithms. We propose that machine consciousness may be produced by similar adaptive algorithms running on the machine Global Workspace Theory is currently the most empirically supported and widely discussed theory of consciousness. It provides a high-level description of such algorithms, based on a large body of psychological and brain evidence. LIDA provides an explicit implementation of much of GWT, which can be shown to perform human-like tasks, such as the interactive assignment of naval jobs to sailors. Here we provide brief descriptions of both GWT and LIDA in relation to the scientific evidence bearing on consciousness in the brain. A companion article explores how this approach could lead to machine consciousness (Franklin et al 2009 to appear). We also discuss the important distinction between volition and consciously mediated action selection, and describe an operational definition of consciousness via verifiable reportability. These are issues that may well bear on the possibility of machine consciousness.

The problem of consciousness is one of the most important problems in science as well as in philosophy. There are different philosophers and different scientists who define it and explain it differently. As far as our knowledge of consciousness is concerned, 'consciousness' does not admit of a definition in terms of genus and differentia or necessary and sufficient condition. In this paper I shall explore the very idea of machine consciousness. The machine consciousness has offered causal explanation to the 'how' and 'what' of consciousness, but they failed to explain the 'why' of consciousness. Their explanation is based on the ground that consciousness is causally dependent on the material universe and that of all, consciousness phenomena can be explained by mapping the physical universe. Again, this mechanical/epistemological theory of consciousness is essentially committed to scientific world view, which cannot avoid metaphysical implication of consciousness. 12
