Text understanding agents and the Semantic Web

Abstract

We discuss the challenges involved in adapting the OntoSem natural language processing system to the Web. One set of tasks involves processing Web documents, translating their computed meaning representations from the OntoSem's native KR language into the Semantic Web language OWL, and publishing the results as Web pages and RSS feeds. Another set of tasks works in reverse -querying the Web for facts needed by OntoSem, translating them from OWL into OntoSem's native KR language and importing the results. A central problem underlying both sets of tasks is that of translating knowledge between OntoSem's KR language and ontologies and those of the Semantic Web. OntoSem2OWL has been developed as a translation system to support these translations. We describe SemNews, an implemented prototype application that demonstrates the process. It monitors RSS feeds of news stories, applies OntoSem to understand the text, and exports the computed facts back to the Web in OWL.

This paper presents the general objectives of the ONTOTEXT project (From Text to Knowledge for the Semantic Web), and the activities carried out during the first year of its development cycle. First, the task of annotating huge amounts of textual data (eg those available on the Web or in local document collections) will be introduced, focusing on its importance in order to enhance the interoperability of such data through ontology-based reasoning. Then, the main issues related to the annotation task will be discussed.

Evaluating the performance of the OntoSem semantic analyzer

This paper describes an innovative evaluation regimen developed for the text meaning representations (TMRs) produced by the Ontological Semantic (OntoSem) general purpose syntactic-semantic analyzer. The goal of evaluation is not only to determine the quality of TMRs for given texts, but also to assign blame for various classes of errors, thus suggesting directions for continued work on both knowledge resources and processors. The paper includes descriptions of the OntoSem processing environment, the evaluation regime itself and results from our first evaluation effort.

Evaluation of the Ontology Web Language (OWL) as a Knowledge Representation

Computer understanding is a challenge problem in Artificial Intelligence. A multi-agent system has been developed to tackle this problem. Among its modules is its knowledge base (vocabulary agents). This paper discusses the use of the Ontology Web Language (OWL) to represent the knowledge base. An example of applying OWL in sentence understanding is given. Followed by an evaluation of OWL.

Agents Making Sense of the Semantic Web

Effective use of the vast quantity of available information and services on the Internet will require multi-agent systems to be tightly integrated with existing web infrastructure. This however will be impossible unless the information on the web is presented in a semantic language, such as the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML), which is one aim of the "Semantic Web". As part of our exploration of Semantic Web technology, and DAML in particular, we have constructed ITTALKS, a web-based system for automatic and intelligent notification of information technology talks. In this paper, we describe the ITTALKS system, and discuss the numerous ways in which the use of Semantic Web concepts and DAML extend its ability to provide an intelligent online service to both the human community and, more interestingly, the agents assisting them.

A Natural Language Interface for Information Retrieval on Semantic Web Documents

We present a dialogue system that enables the access in natural language to a web information retrieval system. We use a Web Semantic Language to model the knowledge conveyed by the texts. In this way we are able to obtain the associated knowledge necessary to perform the different analysis stages of natural language sentences. In the context of information retrieval, we aim to develop a system that, by increasing the interaction management capabilities, is able to achieve a better degree of cooperativeness and to reduce the average number of interactions needed to retrieve the intended set of documents. The documents in the IR system considered here are composed by the set of documents produced by the Portuguese Attorney General since 1940. These documents were analyzed and an ontology describing their structure and content was defined. Then, they were automatically parsed and a (partial) semantic structure was created. The ontology and the semantic content was represented in the OWL language. An example of a user interaction session is presented and explained in detail.

We describe our research on automatically generating rich semantic annotations of text and making it available on the Semantic Web. In particular, we discuss the challenges involved in adapting the OntoSem natural language processing system for this purpose. OntoSem, an implementation of the theory of ontological semantics under continuous development for over fifteen years, uses a specially constructed NLP-oriented ontology and an ontologicalsemantic lexicon to translate English text into a custom ontology-motivated knowledge representation language, the language of text meaning representations (TMRs). OntoSem concentrates on a variety of ambiguity resolution tasks as well as processing unexpected input and reference. To adapt OntoSem's representation to the Semantic Web, we developed a translation system, OntoSem2OWL, between the TMR language into the Semantic Web language OWL. We next used OntoSem and OntoSem2OWL to support SemNews, an experimental web service that monitors RSS news sources, processes the summaries of the news stories and publishes a structured representation of the meaning of the text in the news story.

Integrating language understanding agents into the semantic web

Abstract Many intelligent agents need knowledge and information to support their reasoning and problem solving. The World Wide Web is a vast, open, accessible and free source of knowledge, but virtually all of it is encoded as natural language text–a form difficult for most agents to directly understand. We describe initial work on adapting a mature language understanding agent to process Web text and publish its output in the Semantic Web language OWL.

Semantic Processing of Natural Language Queries in the OntoNL Framework

The OntoNL Framework provides an architecture and re-usable components for automating as much as possible the building of natural language interfaces to information systems. In addition to the syntactic analysis components, OntoNL has semantic analysis components which exploit domain ontologies to provide better disambiguation of the user input. We present in this paper the algorithms used for semantic processing of the natural language queries, as well as an ontology-driven semantic relatedness measure developed for this purpose. We also present extensive evaluation results with different ontologies using human subjects.

Semantic Web Machine Reading with

A machine reader is a tool able to transform natural language text to formal structured knowledge so as the latter can be interpreted by machines, according to a shared semantics. FRED is a machine reader for the semantic web: its output is a RDF/OWL graph, whose design is based on frame semantics. Nevertheless, FRED’s graph are domain and task independent making the tool suitable to be used as a semantic middleware for domainor taskspecific applications. To serve this purpose, it is available both as REST service and as Python library. This paper provides details about FRED’s capabilities, design issues, implementation and evaluation.
