5 Configuration and Execution Support for Distributed Tests

The TINA architecture specifications are well-known and have been available for many years. Experiences have been gathered with prototypical implementations of the TINA architecture or parts of it. These implementations have shown the benefits of the generic concept of TINA for surrounding distributed telecommunication services. Most of the implementations use new object-oriented implementation languages like C++ or Java and communication architectures like CORBA. However, up to now the question of the performance and satiability of TINA-conforming implementations, i.e., their eligibility for real applications with thousands of simultaneously acting users, still remains. The internet is being transformed by rich interconnected objectbased applications that support session-based interactions between users and applications over a variety of protocols (HTTP/s, SOAP, SIP). In this paper, we analyse and demonstrate the key benefits and advantages of TTCN-3, especially in terms of costs, as a test language and framework for testing internet applications. The integration of TTCN-3 and object-based unit test frameworks can provide superior testing of interconnected object-based internet applications but is currently limited by a small flaw in the TTCN-3 concrete layer architecture. We propose a refinement to the TTCN-3 standard which enables seamless integration with object-based unit test-frameworks. An existing TTCN-3 vendor has already incorporated the changes in the latest version of their tool and ETSI has established a committee to modify the TTCN-3 standard accordingly. We demonstrate the benefits with a series of examples involving both SIP and HTTP-based internet applications.

Testing of Communicating Systems XIV, 2002

This paper discusses the implementation of test systems, which are specified based on TTCN version 3 (TTCN-3). TTCN-3 has recently been standardized by [4] European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) as a new test specification language beyond protocol testing. TTCN-3 source code however only constitutes the first step in a TTCN-3 test system implementation. A complete test system implementation also requires the specification of a test and platform specific adaptation layer. This issue is addressed in the TTCN-3 Runtime Interface (TRI) draft standard also developed at ETSI. The TRI is expected to become the future standard interface for all TTCN-3 test system implementations. We present different kinds of test systems which can be built from the conceptual model provided by the TRI. Next to a discussion on the application of these concepts for classic conformance testing, we also propose a new approach, which significantly simplifies the specification and implementation of TTCN test systems for IP-based applications. We illustrate this approach with the presentation of an application example.

Writing tests for concurrent systems is difficult and time consuming. Handling concurrency requires an expressive language, yet the same language should be easy to read and edit. This paper gives an overview of the main concepts and features of the new testing language TTCN version 3 (TTCN-3). TTCN-3 is a complete new testing language built from a textual core notation on which a number of different presentation formats are possible. This makes TTCN-3 quite universal and application independent. One of the standardised presentation formats is based on the tree and tabular format from previous TTCN versions and another standardised presentation format is based on MSCs. TTCN-3 is a modular language and has a similar look and feel to a typical programming language. The test definition language TTCN-3 is currently under standardization by ETSI/ITU-T. Its intended field of application is testing and performance measurement of communication hard- and software. TTCN-3 does include mechanisms for specifying remote hardware access and for distributed execution of testing code components. But for running compiled TTCN-3 code distributed onto distinct nodes of different vendors an architecture is needed which offers standardized means for dynamic, program controlled deployment, configuration and status inquiry of active and passive resources. TUB-TCI is a proposal for such an architecture, characterized by (1) totally generic definition of component classes, (2) coexistence of standardized (XML based) and specialized (high-speed) communication channels, (3) a model-based, strictly formal definition given in Z and (4) a simple, minimized but powerful execution model. Especially because of the integration of non-standard, high speed data channels TUB-TCI seems applicable for dynamical routing of real-time signals in general, beyond the field of test execution.

The increasing complexity of today's testing scenarios demands for an integrated, open and flexible approach to support the management of the overall test process. Furthermore systems under test become composite (e.g. including Computer Telephony Integrated platform aspects), embedded (e.g. with hardware/software codesign) and run on distributed architectures (e.g. client/server architectures). In addition, it is increasingly unrealistic to restrict the consideration of the testing activities to single units, since complex subsystems affect each other and require scalable, integrated test methodologies. In this paper, we present a test management layer driving the generation, execution and evaluation of system-level tests in a highly heterogeneous landscape. The management layer introduces the required flexibilization of the overall architecture of the test environment: it is a modular and open environment, so that several tools and units under test can be added at need. By means of a CORBA/RMI-based implementation of the external interfaces of the management layer, we are able to address and encapsulate a wide range of commercial test tools. This increases over time the reach and the capabilities of the resulting environment.

The objectives of the paper is to review the conflicting requirements and needs of existing telecommunication network testing approaches, services and equipment, in order to provide a simple but powerful solution that allows automated and standardized testing activities.
