Currently he is an honorary senior research professor at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. Among his recent publications are the prize-winning book, Beyond the Neon Lights: Everyday Shanghai in the Early Twentieth Century (1999), and Modernity and Cultural Identity in Taiwan (2001).
