The newly elected Northern Region Chairman of the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Dr. Abass Bundu was yesterday 21st October 2013 given access to his passport to ensure he travels out of the country for urgent and important medical treatment.

Dr. Bundu’s passport was seized as part of his bail condition on a matter relating to embezzlement of state fund accrued from some Sierra Leonean passport illegal deal.

The said matter has been in court since April 2012 and for eighteen months now, has accrued more than twelve adjournments with only one prosecution witness testifying so far.

It has been reported that Dr. Abass Bundu suffered a massive heart attack over the weekend that led to a partial stroke and coma for some hours at the Choithram Hospital at hill Station in Freetown.

Representing Dr. Bundu in court yesterday Monday 21st October 2013, Lawyer Suliaman Banja Tejan-Sie applied for the court to hand over his client’s passport so as to allow him travelling access out of Sierra Leone for an urgent medication.

He called on the court to review the bail condition that demanded the accused to surrender his travelling documents including his passport to the Master and Registrar of the High Court of Sierra Leone.

Principal State Counsel, Gerald Soyie made no objection to the application made by the defense and Magistrate Komba Kamanda ruled that the Acting Master and Registrar of the High Court should release the accused person’s passport and other travelling documents with immediate effect.

At this point, the matter was then adjourned to 20th October 2014 for continuation.
