The town has grown from a Village Panchayat in the year 1939and latter upgraded to Second Grade Municipality in 1956. By status it was declared as first Grade Panchayat in 1963 and then a Selection Grade Panchayat in 1968. It was declared a Second Grade Municipality, in 1.6.2010.The extent of the Municipality is 22.17 sq.km in Tiruppur District of Tamil Nadu. It is about 438 Km away from Chennai. Kangeyam Town is a major commercial centre for agriculture especially rice and oil that is why it is called as Rice and Oil Town.
