Av-Art was an art association I founded with 4 pals in 1990. I had been in Paris for a year & was disappointed by what Copenhagen had to offer in terms of galleries, poetry, music etc. The cultural supply was mainstream & limited. After having had this conversation with Bille, Hasse, Pawel & my cousin Tue we formed Av-Art. At first we thought of calling it Entart, but Tue meant the Third Reich connotations were too big. We went for Av, which means “ouch!” or an acronym for “Audiovisual” + Art which means “art”. We opened Av-Art in all old welding shop floor in a neighborhood then dominated by hashish & squatters. Av-Art featured real underground stuff & leading artist in improvisational & experimental music & avant-garde classical music. The gallery side was more folksy with local artist exhibiting. I curated the poetry part (I wanted to be a poet until my 22nd year). Most gifted young poets of that generation had readings there (Simon Grotrian helped me pick) & it was the only place were poets had readings recurrently in that period. Av-Art records is all what’s left.
