TIFF image files that are compressed in the JPEG format cannot be correctly opened by the Office Document Imaging tool in Office 2007 or Office 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2003, some of the image files do not open correctly when you try to open image files. This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The image files are Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) image files.
  • The TIFF image files are compressed in the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format.
  • You try to open the image files by using the Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool.
  • You try to do this on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
For example, this issue occurs if you try to use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool to open an image file that is saved as a 24-bit True Color TIFF image file with JPEG compression.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the improved Graphics Device Interface (GDI+) in Windows XP provides less support to read TIFF image files that are compressed in the JPEG format. In this scenario, the image file may not open correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool to set the image color compression for images to lossless compression (LZW). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click the Compression tab.
  4. Under TIFF color compression, click to select the Perform lossless compression (LZW). Results in larger files but allows improved sharing with other TIFF viewers check box, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit to quit the Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool.
