- At least seven persons were injured after government forces fired
shots at the demonstrators that were shattering shop windows and
stoning buses in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday.
Several
hundreds of young people staged anti-disarmament demonstrations
in the capital Mogadishu.
Protestors
were angry at the government’s plan to disarm the civilian
population. All shops and business places in the capital were closed.
The
demonstrators burnt tires, chanting anti-Ethiopian slogans. The
government forces are still trying to disperse the demonstrators.
Most
of the people in Mogadishu have been angered by the government’s
disarmament plan after nearly 1,000 Somali troops from the semi-autonomous
regional government of Puntland were reported to be taking part
in the disarmament.
The demonstrations that are still taking place in different locations
in the capital hampered ordinary people from going to their business
and work places.
Islamist released
The
news comes as former Islamic Courts chairman of Baledweyn, central
Somalia, Farhan Moalim, was released last night after the government
forces had arrested him earlier.
Government
forces caught Sheik Farhan Moalim late Friday afternoon. He was
Islamic Courts chairman of Hiran provincial town of Baledweyn. He
was released last night after local tribal elders convened with
government officials in the area.
The
government announced a week ago that it extended an amnesty to all
former Islamists if they surrendered themselves and handed their
weapons over to the government.
Witnesses
said Moalim is now being guarded at his house in Baledweyn in faer
that local militias may kill him.
