The method begins with the definition of geological, geotechnical and aesthetic parameters that determine the quality of the slate deposit. Then a collection of data from continuous sampling exploration was carried out in order to propose a quality index through multivariate statistical techniques that

Temporal trends of Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from the Spanish North-Atlantic coast 1991–1999

This study was carried out by the Centro Oceanográfico de Vigo of the Instituto Español de Oceanografia (I.E.O.) as part of the Spanish contribution to the Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programme (JAMP) of the OSPAR Convention. The experimental work and subsequent statistical treatment, following OSPAR procedures and guidelines, are described. In order to carry out the statistical treatment of the data, median values of the different shell length classes were used for each contaminant, year and area. The Kendall T-b correlation coefficient was used with the purpose of demonstrating the existence of a downward significant temporal trend in the pollution levels, according to the advice of ICES Working Group on Statistical Aspects of Environmental Monitoring. A decrease of copper levels was detected in Vigo, Pontevedra and Arosa, of mercury in Pontevedra and A Coruña, of lead in Vigo, Pontevedra, A Coruña and Bilbao and of zinc in Pontevedra and A Coruña. However, a cadmium positive trend was registered at Ria de Vigo. No significant trends were detected in the other cases.

Since high& qualijied experts form wine-tasting committees, the reliability of the scores is not generally questioned. Nevertheless, statistical methods can be applied to assess the work of tasters from the point of view of concordance. Agreement degree may be used as a measurement of the reliability of subjective rating. In order to evaluate both the extent of agreement as well as the circumstances that produce disagreement, this paper examines the subjective scores assigned to white wines awarded the Rias Baixas (Spain) denomination of origin certificate using statistical analysis. It will be seen that agreement depends significantly on the variability in scoring. A statistical method is proposed, which permits an appraisal, in terms of consistency and reliability, of the committees that evaluate wines for quality and authenticity.

This consisted of mechanically extracting the surface layer of the batholith and separating the feldspar from the quartz using the granulometric separation method, given that the size of the grains of the feldspar is greater than that of quartz. Following washing, grinding and magnetic separation of the feldspar in order to eliminate the ferromagnesium minerals, the saleable feldspar was characterised in terms of the factors that determine its market value, namely, its content in Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , Na 2 O and K 2 O. Following the opening of prospecting pits in the granite massif, samples were analysed in the laboratory using three different granulometric cuts and by reproducing the treatment process. The values for the quality variables of saleable feldspar were obtained, and the results were interpolated to the entire deposit using the kriging method. In order to summarise the information from the above-mentioned variables, a quality index was constructed using multivariate statistics and by employing market criteria, and subsequently, the values of the index were interpolated to the entire deposit using bidimensional kriging. The map of saleable quality feldspar from the deposit permits both affirmation of the treatment process yield for each granulometric cut and the planning of extraction from the deposit to obtain a homogeneous quality in the saleable feldspar.

We applied support vector machines (SVM) and LS-boosting to the assessment of the technical quality of a new unexploited area of a mine, and compared the results to those obtained for kriging and neural networks. Firstly we analyzed the relationship between kriging and semiparametric SVM in a regularisation framework and explored the different alternatives to train these networks. Subsequently, in an attempt to combine both radial and projection structures, we formulated a boosting technique for radial basis function networks (RBFs) defined over projections in the input space (RBFPP). The application of these techniques to our test drilling data demonstrated a similar level of performance for all the estimators examined, with the main difference occurring in the shape of the respective deposit reconstructions. Therefore, in choosing between the different techniques, an essential aspect will be their ability to reproduce the morphological characteristics of the true process. In this paper we also compared the sparsity of the different solutions. SVMs, multilayer perceptron networks (MLPs), RBFs and RBFPP are more parsimonious than kriging or regularization networks (RNs), but radial estimators such as SVM and RBF tend to loose their sparsity when the estimated covariogram is used as kernel.

In this paper, a methodology for quality evaluation applied to slate extraction is developed in three phases, as a tool of support to the planning. The first phase consists of defining the geotechnical parameters that aÂect the bank and to appraise them in the visible faces. The second phase consists of applying multivariate statistical techniques related to discriminant analysis data to evaluate a quality function. This function can be seen as a recovery index of the slate mass, being its variance intervals established in the analyzed faces. The third phase consists of a forecast of the values of the index from visible faces to the inside of the extraction bank, using geostatistics to evaluate the quality of the mass and to plan the mechanical cutting works, in order to get the best results.

Because of the absence of standards, designers must deal with many different systems to do the same work. The proposed CAD/CAM system makes posible design and manufacturing with a set of different knitting machines. It incorporates users experience , making easy the traditionally hard job of knitting designers and manufacturers .

The purpose is to contrast the consistency of the qualifications of tasting panels to independent data obtained through physical and chemical analysis from the same samples. We intend to build some methods for non-subjective identification of wine samples made from a single grape variety.

To assist us in estimating the quality of slate from a small set of drilling data within an unexploited portion of the mine, the following estimation techniques were applied: kriging, regularization networks (RN), multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks, and radial basis function (RBF) networks. Our numerical results for the test holes show that the best results were obtained using an RN (kriging) which takes into account the known anisotropy. Differing deposit configurations were obtained, depending on the method applied. Variations in the form of pockets were obtained when using a radial pattern with RBF, RN, and kriging models while a stratified pattern was obtained with the MLP model. Pockets are more suitable for a slate mine, which indicates that the selection of a technique should take account of the specific configuration of the deposit according to mineral type.
