Ambiances theory for architectural design address the theme trough the discussion between the infinite atmospheres and the last concerns on the happiness business. The paper shows that creating atmosphere in public spaces can facilitate the design of places with sensible qualities and the improvement of the humans' living conditions, beyond the «narcissistic» production of sterile and stereotypical architectural objects with no social background.

A cross analysis of the physical dimensions of the built space, of the sound environment and of the user's perceptions allows to describe the minimum conditions of existence of these remarkable sound situations (soundscapes). All of this work is compiled in a catalog that is the first tool for sound design of such type of spaces. This catalog is available online on the portal Esquis'Sons (esquissons.com) and geolocalized. This papers shows also how from this remarkable soundscapes, a parametric tool in order to sketch the soundscape of future project has been built. The application use 3D spatial model used by designers and provide a real time 3D virtual sound environment in which users can hear the impact of architectural choices made during th...

Nevertheless, taking care of the inherent sound dimensions in architectural urban projects remains an unresolved challenge. The researches of the last 30 years have shown how the sound environment qualities are forgotten in favour of visual qualities. This article presents a new method dedicated to generating simple sound sketches for architectural conception while preserving the complexity of acoustic simulation. This paper argues that the Esquis'sons! sound sketch tool reconfigures architectural design by considering an innovative view its the temporality, allowed by numeric designing tools able to intervene and offer a continuous feedback regarding sound environment.

My purpose is to describe sound qualities or sound failures perceived by users in the aim to create a prediction tool for architects. Sociological, acoustical and architectural surveys have been used to understand what users feel while taking several walks inside the stations. Sound quality is approached through acoustical criteria measurement and evaluation of subjective listening criteria. This research led surveys in Paris-Gare du Nord, Gare Montparnasse and Gare Haussmann (Eole line). This paper shows how a specific methodology can be used to develop a catalogue which connects spatial forms, sound sources and social practices. As it is impossible to study in situ the same type of architecture in different stations, we choose to study a basic social practice which is common to the three stations : a walk of a person which crosses a station to use another mean of transport-for example, the walk between the suburbs trains platform and the entry of the subway. Several walks in each station have been chosen to value architectural devices, sound sources and social practices that can be observed. The same action was studied (1) at different time in the week-with or without public in the space-(2) in the 2 directions of the walk-go and back-and (3) in the three stations. This paper shows how sound quality perceived by users is depends on the coexistence of sociological, spatial and acoustical variables. It shows as well in which way the same space can create several sound qualities. All these results are feeding general thought on predictability of the sound quality inside public indoor spaces.

A cross analysis, synthesised in a catalogue, of the physical dimensions of the built space, of the sound environment and of the user’s perceptions allows to describe the minimum conditions of existence of these remarkable sound situations. A parametric tool in order to sketch the sound qualities of future projects has been built by linking a 3D spatial model and a real time 3D virtual sound environment composition in which users can hear the impact of architectural choices made during the design process.

My purpose is to describe sonic qualities or sonic failures in these spatial transitions which are very important in the global appreciation of subterranean spaces. This paper shows how a specific methodology can be used to develop a catalogue which connects spatial forms, sonic sources and social practices. Firstly observations of the same place but with different sonic sources and different practices will take place. Secondly, observations of the same practices and the same sonic sources will be executed but in different places chosen to value the effects of built up spaces, materials used, architectural devices used to come in or out. For all of these configurations, sociological, acoustical and architectural surveys will lead to the understanding what users feel in these transitions. Sonic quality is approached through the development of new protocols of measurement between acoustical criteria and...

The CERG, expert in industrial acoustic, vibration, mecanic and outflow, has understood that the "decibels run" is reaching its limits, and that manufacturers won't spend more time and more funds to reduce noise of sonic bjects. Even though work has be done, electric engines or computer fans, for exemple, will still be noisy for some time. Therefore, another approach can be considered, which may interest manufacturers, which aims to modify, to change, in a word, the sound design of technical object. My work was to conduct two sonic approaches at the same time : one, acoustic, based on measurements, and the other one, ecological, based on perception of sound in situ. This work was essentially theorical, we didn't have enough time to pratice the results of the survey. I attempted to go beyond classical studies which...

After Grenoble (2008) and Montreal (2012), the 3nd Congress (2016), held in Greece, in collaboration with the Department of Architecture of the Polytechnic School of the University of Thessaly at Volos, is an opportunity to circumscribe the notion of ambiance (or atmosphere) in a dynamic prospective and demonstrates how it can become an operator in transforming our habitats, cities and societies. So, the future of ambiances can be analysed according to a three-fold perspective in terms of its pragmatic, theoretical and prospective dimensions.

The research presented here focuses on the sound dimensions of the architectural project. Principles of a sound charter are discussed and ambiance creation is thought through the design of tensions between the material, sensitive and symbolic conditions of the experience of a back plan and the conditions of appearance of sound events. Ambiance design is a means of liberating the perception and representation of metro’s users and a method to design sensitive worlds for the public, participating in this way in the renewing the ordinary experience of the metro.
