Human health effects of coal seam gas activity – a study design framework

Acknowledging concern over potential health impacts of CSG activity, CSIRO’s Gas Industry Social ... more Acknowledging concern over potential health impacts of CSG activity, CSIRO’s Gas Industry Social and Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA) and the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences(QAEHS) funded a study design project to investigate the influence of CSG activity in Australia on human health. The project is a review of the state of knowledge about health impacts of CSG activity, identification of gaps in the knowledge base, and development of a framework that can be used to design a study to address identified gaps. The framework proposed uses the tenets of HIA to identify potential health impacts from a CSG developmentbut is designed to generate new, foundational evidence on possible exposures to local residents from CSG activities and associated health impacts.

Action-Learning Projects to build leadership capacity among academics in first-year science and mathematics: SaMnet

Significant change is required in university teaching, particularly in the daunting first-year of... more Significant change is required in university teaching, particularly in the daunting first-year of university science. Such large-scale change requires a 'movement', says sociologist of higher education Parker Palmer (1992). In a movement, Palmer argues, individual innovations gain collegial support and become fodder for widespread conversations. Then, one needs to establish reward structures to sustain the movement for change. This strategy is being applied in a Leadership Project funded by the Commonwealth Office for Learning and Teaching. We aim to shift practices in university teaching of science and mathematics away from traditional, didactic, content-heavy delivery where many such attempts have failed in the past. Our initiative involves developing the capacity of effective teachers to influence policy and practice within their schools, faculties, and institutions through 'distributed', 'transformational' leadership. This session provides a glimpse of our strategy. The Science and Mathematics network of Australian university educators (SaMnet) is supporting 25 action-learning projects nationally. Many of these projects will focus on firstyear subjects. Project teams are being guided in aligning their worthy undertakings with the key performance indicators of their Dean and legislated mandates, the remit of their Vice Chancellor. As a result, the action-learning within these projects involves more than Action-Learning Projects to build leadership capacity among academics in first-year science and mathematics: SaMnet, nuts and bolts.

The Commonwealth supported SkillCity Project focussed on potentially cost effective and efficient... more The Commonwealth supported SkillCity Project focussed on potentially cost effective and efficient ways to support staff to share teaching materials and insights online. This paper discusses what has been achieved in the Project-and the hurdles that remain-in creating an online resource to enable academics to teach 'generic skills.' Outcomes are discussed in view of the Australian academic context, where resources are stretched and heavy teaching and administrative loads are carried by staff. The paper addresses the Project's initial conceptualisation for online delivery of teaching materials for generic communication skills for groupwork and teamwork, the expected challenges in getting lecturers to adopt these materials, and the equivocal impact to date of this attempt to move university lecturers into innovative practices 'beyond the comfort zone' for their own learning.

ABSTRACT Success in research – or ‘mastery’ as we call it – can lead to interdisciplinarity arisi... more ABSTRACT Success in research – or ‘mastery’ as we call it – can lead to interdisciplinarity arising among the increasingly fragmented disciplines of science: researchers in molecular biology can be assisted by advances in the physics of atomic imaging, when they become aware of a development&#39;s potential and feel motivated to take advantage of it. The unpredictability of advances in scientific research makes the location and nature of interdisciplinarity largely unpredictable. This unpredictability means that organisational structures in which scientific research takes place – and in which our students are trained – are likely to lag behind interdisciplinary synergies developing in the laboratory. The lag time suggested by our model explains the challenges faced by leaders of interdisciplinary programmes in higher education. One can conclude that opportunities for interdisciplinarity in science are held back by discipline-bound institutions.
